Summary
These outspoken writings by the founder of modern nursing record fundamentals in the needs of the sick that must be provided in all nursing. Nightingale covers such timeless topics as ventilation, noise, food, bed and bedding, light, cleanliness, and observation of the sick.
Editor reviews
Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing, presents her studies and guidelines on effective care for the sick. This is as much geared to the common person - specifically women, who she says all must care for someone else at some point in their life - as it is to healthcare professionals. Preventative actions like hygiene, comfort, fresh air, and diet that may now seem commonsense are looked at systematically as methods of aiding the reparative process. Elisabeth Rodgers' delicate British voice takes on a firm educational tone fitting the instructive material and the eminent woman’s undertaking. This is a well-thought, useful guide that rings true today for any person who cares about aiding the suffering of others.

Good for it's time
It's a nice historical read, some of the advice said work even now. But outdated bits were a little annoying to listen, especially homeopathic therapy mentioned at the end.
What made me laugh though was the moment when Florence Nightingale wrote that English patient is definitely feeling better when starts drinking tea again and the bit where she praises English women as being the most observant of all. Oh, Florence.
Not a bad read and historically important.

Beautiful
Such a wonderful book. Very representative of the date it was written. Really interesting perceptions on nursing practice.
