Summary

The Consultant’s Guild has served the Aurelian Empire for over 1,000 years, working in the darkness to hunt dissension and eliminate traitors.

Now, the Emperor is dead.

For Shera, an assassin in the employ of the Consultants, the Emperor’s death is the beginning of a nightmare. Powerful forces hunt the Heart of Nakothi, a cursed artifact that can raise a second Emperor...and corrupt him in the process.

But some desire power at any cost.

The Guild of Navigators, an infamous collection of swindlers and pirates, has been paid a fortune to secure the Heart. Their only lord is greed, their only loyalty to gold, and they would sell the Empire’s freedom for the promise of a quick coin.

In the shadows, a woman works to set the world free.

On the seas, a man seeks to raise a lunatic to lord over mankind.

Will you walk the shadows here with Shera? Or will you explore the seas with Calder, in the parallel novel Of Sea and Shadow?

Unique and captivating story with excellent narration

I’ll start by saying that I’ve read will wights cradle series and found it really good . Picked this up on audible purely because of how good his cradle series was and didn’t even listen to a sample first which is unusual for me .

I then realised that it was narrated by a female . Now in the past I’ve struggled to listen to audiobooks narrated by females , probably because I’m so used to reading and hearing my own voice internally that it’s harder for me to pay attention for longer periods of time and partly probably because I haven’t listened to as many female narrators as male and therefore haven’t found any who I’ve felt have done the books justice .

I have to say that Emily narrated this exceptionally well , I have a small list of narrators I consider excellent in pretty much anything they read and have a tendency to think that even mediocre books can be made better by a great narrator . Whilst great books can be made mediocre or worse by a bad narrator .

Emily is firmly in that small list of great narrators . The story is excellent which helps immensely , but the narration is top notch . The characters are brought to life and given their own unique charisma so much that you get disappointed when the book ends . I’ve immediately purchased the other books in the series “I’ve gone with listening in order and will then switch to the alternative viewpoint “ and will likely now check out what else Emily has narrated and buy a bunch of those books too .

The story is also awesome as is to be expected with will wights books and although massively different from the cradle series in how the world is laid out and how things work but is just as exciting and captivating .

If you’re on the fence about starting this series or aren’t too sure whether it’s worth a listen then give it a go.

Thoroughly enjoyed this book!

Really easy, intriguing listen. Good characters, story and very interesting listening to the counter perspective of the characters from the sibling book.

Soooo Boring and Flat

I regret that I found the narration flat with characters all sounding the same and no change in pace or intonation. Occasionally some words were unclear.

The story held notes interest. With a lot of conversation that just drifted away. After a few chapters I found I was missing whole segments and just didn't care.

Boring and uninspiring narration

I could just not get the narration and the story itself was not anywhere near interesting or good enough to carry me through it, gave up after 4 hours as it did not improve.
