Summary
L'action se passe à la campagne, à deux lieues de Paris. Le baron vient chez la comtesse pour y trouver son neveu qu'il sait amoureux d'elle. Le roi l'a chargé d'aller avec ce neveu, qui est marquis, à Gotha en Allemagne pour y complimenter la grande duchesse qui vient d'accoucher. Le marquis est la distraction même. Il perd la mémoire, confond toutes choses, oublie son ambassade, ne songe qu'à épouser la comtesse, et nous apprenons que celle-ci est tout aussi brouillonne que son fiancé. Tous deux s'adressent des reproches au sujet de leurs quiproquos perpétuels, mais ils s'adorent comme cela. De péripéties en péripéties, le marquis distrait finira par nous confier que "On ne saurait penser à tout"...
