About this listen

Escape to beautiful Provence with the dazzlingly romantic new novel from Sunday Times bestselling author Veronica Henry - available to pre-order now!

'Gorgeously romantic, sweet as French pastries and the perfect read!' MILLY JOHNSON

'A delight from start to finish, like sipping wine on lazy summer days' CAROL KIRKWOOD

One night to fall in love.
One summer to change everything...

Over the last few months, Connie's whole world has fallen apart. Her husband's run off with an older woman, the magazine she works for has gone bust and she's having to sell the family home. So when her beloved godmother, Lismay, begs her to help run the beautiful Château Villette, it couldn't come at a better time...

No one knows the château quite like Connie. She spent a blissful summer there in her twenties, learning to cook delicious French food for the guests, ironing the lavender-scented sheets - and trying to resist the very handsome neighbour, Remy.

As soon as she arrives, it's clear that the château is close to crumbling and Connie knows she's going to have her work cut out. Could it be the fresh start she didn't even know she needed - and will she find a way to save the château, before it's too late?

Lovely story. Horrendous narration.

The story is simply lovely and everything you’d expect from Veronica Henry. I especially loved the descriptions of Lismay’s feelings of isolation and abandonment. I imagine reading this would be a total joy, but sadly I chose to get it on audible and what a mistake that was. The narrator’s attempt at a Birmingham accent was beyond painful. As somebody from the Midlands it was so off the mark I couldn’t even find it funny - half of words were Liverpudlian and then the most basic of words were not pronounced correctly. I don’t know how old this narrator is, but she sounds pretty old and having her narrate the more intimate scenes is like having your Nan offer to read you some soft porn. There must be far more talented, younger actresses out there who would be better suited for this job.

Lovely escapism

I loved this book. I always enjoy Veronica Henry's books but I think this has been my favourite so far.
I loved the characters. I loved the way the story was set in both the past and present day. I found myself wanting to listen to this book at every opportunity.

Accuracy

Pity about the errors. Part of the story takes place at harvest time in the vineyard. Author describes smell of mimosa - this is in flower in early spring. Later talks about the chateau in Provence being 400 miles away from London - it’s at least double that. Good story though

Reliably comforting

Veronica Henry never fails to deliver. Feels like coming home. Certain elements are reassuring predictable and yet there is always a new memory to cherish. The attention to detail is not contrived, rather easily entwined through the plot. All the characters will be missed. Thank you for another satisfying read.
