About this listen

On July 10, 1943, two great Allied armadas of over 2,000 ships readied to invade Sicily. This was Operation Husky, the first step toward winning a toehold in fascist-occupied Europe. Among the invaders were 20,000 Canadian troops serving in the First Canadian Infantry Division and First Canadian Tank Brigade - in their first combat experience. Over the next 28 days, the Allied troops carved a path through the rugged land, despite fierce German opposition. Drawing on firsthand accounts of veterans and official military records, Operation Husky offers a gripping, meticulous account of this seminal operation and the young men who fought, died, and survived it.

Clear Account

Good clear and straight forward account of the Canadian involvement in Sicilly for Operation Husky. Little analysis but good description to bring events to life. Worth printing and keeping a good map to gand while listening.

Exceptional

One of the most down to earth and to the point war narratives I've come across. The narrator makes no excitement of the issues and many problems the Canadian troops experienced and reports it in a refreshingly matter of fact way. It also shows how many mistakes were made by both commanders at the front and by those further back; poor reconnaissance, misfired or misdirected artillery fire and bombing, erratic communication and others. But it was the PBI who suffered and under appalling conditions. The Allied command generally had assumed that the invasion of Sicily was going to be relatively straightforward, but despite previous experience, had badly underestimated the German ability to mount a very strong defence at almost every stage of the campaign.
A very worthwhile book indeed.
