About this listen

*The definitive biography of King Charles III, by Sunday Times bestselling author Robert Jobson, published on the eve of the Coronation*

'To Charles, being monarch has nothing to do with power - he believes his role is to lead. It is up to others whether they choose to follow.'

When Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II died in September 2022, it sent shockwaves around the world. The longest reigning and oldest monarch, at ninety-six years of age, she had just publicly celebrated her Platinum Jubilee in June 2022. The Queen's death meant the passing of the Crown to her son, HRH Charles, Prince of Wales, her controversial, earnest, and outspoken heir, who had long lived in the shadow of her mystique.

King Charles III's own life has been marred by scandal and myth, but who is the real man behind the Crown? In this revelatory book, renowned royal correspondent and author Robert Jobson examines the life of our new King, and his passions, purpose, and motivations. On the eve of his landmark coronation, Our King considers the life of the man and the monarch, reflecting on how his values and beliefs will shape him as he takes on this monumental role.

Disappointing

I thought I was buying a book about the king. It was a summary of all the news coverage about the royal family apart from two short conversations the author claims to have had with the King which are not of any particular significance. If you are after a summary of news coverage about the royal family what Harry said in his documentary/book etc then you might find this useful. I found it a real disappointment as I learned nothing new. Also the title is misleading the book is about the family.

Turns out everyone is right!

A good listen especially in the run-up to the coronation. Author seems to have had good access to the principles and to have thoroughly done his research, including paying close attention to Harry's book. The result is a compelling portrait of a family and extended family of otherwise normal people just doing their best while being tied into knots by the preposterous monarchic machine. The author doesn't pass judgement upon anyone but he does an extraordinary job of just showing how things are how they are and how the family members each sit within the results of their experiences and reactions.

As a side note, and a judgement from me- Anne's decision to forego titles (and the exposure that would have accompanied the titles) for her offspring was extremely wise.

Performance was good- necessarily narrators vary their voices when speaking as whomever they are directly quoting. The voice this narrator used threw me offtrack a few times but it's a minor quibble. He was fine overall.

Irritating narration voice

I did manage to listen to the whole book but the voice of the narrator was not easy on the ear. Overall, I don't think I have learned anything new about our King from this book. It is possible I missed something interesting as I found myself mentally switching off to escape the narrator.

Didn’t live up to the hype

Sadly nothing really new in here but a pleasant enough listen. A good one if you haven’t read books about Charles previously.

Thoroughly enjoyable listen

The King's life condenced very nicely into a quick, enjoyable and well written listen. Anyone who is looking for a tidbit of salacious gossip won't find it here - sorry royal drama crowd!! But if you're wanting an insight into the way the King thinks and the influence it will have on his role as monarch, the inclusions here are surprising insightful. I can't help but like Jobson's style - laid back, genteel and dignified - it makes a change from the scandal mongering mischief makers that usual sell their Royal wears. I found the lack of extremism here rather refreshing.

Good Book let down by terrible narrator

The narrator was entirely wrong for this book about our British monarch. He sounds Scandinavian, ancient & sycophantic. It completely ruined my enjoyment of the book.
