Summary

A spare yet eloquent, bittersweet yet inspiring story of a man and a woman who, in advanced age, come together to wrestle with the events of their lives and their hopes for the imminent future.

In the familiar setting of Holt, Colorado, home to all of Kent Haruf's inimitable fiction, Addie Moore pays an unexpected visit to a neighbor, Louis Waters. Her husband died years ago, as did his wife, and in such a small town they naturally have known of each other for decades; in fact, Addie was quite fond of Louis's wife. His daughter lives hours away in Colorado Springs, her son even farther away in Grand Junction, and Addie and Louis have long been living alone in houses now empty of family, the nights so terribly lonely, especially with no one to talk with.

Their brave adventures - their pleasures and their difficulties - are hugely involving and truly resonant, making Our Souls at Night the perfect final installment to this beloved writer's enduring contribution to American literature.

Beautiful

I have just finished the audible version of this book and have to say I thoroughly enjoyed it. Its a bit emotionally as I can relate in so many ways being 61 myself I have the same sort of relationship. Amazing, beautiful and totally fulfilling for them ❤️

Beautiful and enduring

As a recently popular book club novel, 'Our Souls at Night' has received a lot of interest of late not least because of the film tie-in version. It is a touching and thought-provoking tale of love found in the later stages of life. Louis and Addie live only a stone's throw away from each other on the outskirts of small-town Colorado. Aware of her loneliness, Addie seeks companionship from widower Louis. As their relationship slowly develops, the pair face harsh criticism and judgement from gossiping neighbours and even their families - threatening their now essential relationship. Can this be overcome, or will they succumb to the pressure and break the bond that they have formed?

Whilst listening to this wonderfully narrated edition, my preconceptions of romance in the later years of life were challenged in the most subtle and poignant ways. What is also striking about this re-imagined boy meets girl story is that it was the author's last. Kent Haruf passed away only a week after his publisher received this swansong, and the story is all the more powerful for it.

Lovely book , well worth listening to, narrator is excellent

I read this book when I read a review of it by Jacqueline Wilson who said she had reread it .

I loved the story which is about an older couple , neighbours falling in love and how they brought happiness to a sad little boy .

I was just a little disappointed in the ending .
I would have liked to see Addie stick to her guns .

Delightful

Delightful. Plenty to discuss with the ladies in bookclub. The narrator had a particularly charming voice. Bravo, great choice .

Surprisingly moving

Gorgeous narration - I think I've fallen in love with Mr Bramhall. A delicate, often funny, sometimes sad novel about companionship and love. I thought it was wonderful.

I came to the film first!

However I think I enjoyed the book best of all.
Sad that a strong woman lets a bigoted son ruin her life!

The loneliness of old age

There is a great understanding of what it’s like to get old. The story shows the choices we could have but don’t take. It’s pithy and compassionate.

Perfect. Just Perfect.

Beautiful sparse prose that starts off with a strange premise of two older widowed people deciding to spend their nights lying in the same bed talking about their lives. Of course, this doesn't sound like an immediately compelling story-line, but it quickly becomes a narrative that you want to follow and you care deeply about the characters. The story casts a wonderful hypnotic spell laced with melancholy. It is also life affirming. An utterly, utterly beautiful book that deserves to be more widely read. The narrator's delivery also perfectly enhances the quietly unfolding story and I am so glad that I listened to the audio-version.
