Summary

This stunning blend of historical romance and time traveling adventure has captured the hearts of millions of readers around the world and catapulted author Diana Gabaldon to the top of the New York Times best seller list. Outlander introduces an exhilarating world of heroism and breathtaking thrills as one woman is torn between past and present, passion and love.

In 1945, former combat nurse Claire Randall returns from World War II and joins her husband for a second honeymoon. Their blissful reunion is shattered when she touches a boulder in an ancient stone ruin and is instantly transported to 1743 Scotland, a place torn by war and raiding border clans. Will Claire find her way back to her own time, or is her destiny forever linked with Clan MacKenzie and the gallant James Fraser?

Critic reviews

"Davina Porter maintains the distinct voices she creates for each character throughout the lengthy narration. Her delivery of 18th-century language sounds authentic and is easily understandable." ( AudioFile)

My Favourite Book

This Book is called Cross Stitch in the UK, Outlander is its American title. I bought the book many years ago as the title facinated me being a keen needlewoman. It turned out to be one of the best book I have ever bought, and I subsequently purchesed each of the books that continue the story as and when they were published. My sight is not as good as it was now and reading is getting quite difficult so, I was delighted to see a number of the books available as audio books. Needless to say I will buying them all, but I do hope that The Fiery Cross will be available unabridged soon, and the next novel A Breath of Snow and Ashes will follow. I have also seem on the writer's web page that a new book in the series will be available about September, so lets keep our fingers crossed that this will reach audible eventually.

Beautifully written and beautifully narrated

Davina Porter has done an amazing job of bringing one of my favourite novels to life. The distinct voices (and spot-on accents) she gives to both the English and Scots characters are perfect, and if anything, I think I enjoyed listening to the story more than reading it for myself.

My only slight criticism is of the recording itself. In many places I could hear talking and laughter in the background, as though the narrator was inside a building with busy crowds outside her room. A number of times I actually paused my iPod thinking the sound came from nearby, only for the chatter to disappear with the audiobook. It is only slight, but there nevertheless.
If, like me, you are listening to audiobooks at work or in a car where there is already background noise to some extent, it would be unlikely to trouble you. However, if you like stories at bedtime, in the quiet, it may be more noticeable and irksome.

I am buying all the other Diana Gabaldon books narrated by Davina Porter - and although the last two in the series are not currently available, I hope they soon will be.

Lose yourself in a true romantic fantasy time travel and adventure story

Love the outlander Series I have read all the books so far awaiting the new one! I love listening to the audio books too, Davila Porter is a superb narrator although, I do find her a little too posh and sounds older then being in her 20’s but I adore her. She does all the accents and characters brilliantly. I have all the audiobooks in the collection but always find my self relistening to the book over and over.

Loved it!

I bought this book on the recommendation of a young lady I was dating at the time, I’m very glad I did, the story is excellent, the reading very good (if having some annoying background noise in places) but a very enjoyable listen non-the less.

History or 50 shades?

I think there could have been more of an historical content. By half way through, it became a love story with rather a lot of sex.
I’m no prude, as I think it was written rather well. I wasn’t really after that much relationship detail!
I also recommended it to a friend before the sex scenes became graphic and plentiful-I’ll have to warn her!
The narrator is excellent.

Brilliant!

Would you consider the audio edition of Outlander to be better than the print version?

Definitely! You can't stop reading this book it's so good but I can 'read' and cook, clean etc., at the same time.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Clare. Her sense of adventure, courage and romance is what I would like to be and to have a man like Jamie, well.... unprintable!

What about Davina Porter’s performance did you like?

A wonderful performance, her many voices and dialects were such that when she spoke you knew who it was without any name. When I hear her voice I hear Clare. I am so pleased they have not changed the narrator throughout the series.

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

The best romantic adventure ever!

Any additional comments?

After reading 'Outlander' I have since purchased four more in the series and have read nothing else since. I am not looking forward to the series ending but am enthralled with the story and can't stop listening.
