About this listen
A stunning look at World War II from the other side.... From the turret of a German tank, Colonel Hans von Luck commanded Rommel's 7th and then 21st Panzer Division. El Alamein, Kasserine Pass, Poland, Belgium, Normandy on D-Day, the disastrous Russian front - von Luck fought there with some of the best soldiers in the world. German soldiers. Awarded the German Cross in Gold and the Knight's Cross, von Luck writes as an officer and a gentleman. Told with the vivid detail of an impassioned eyewitness, his rare and moving memoir has become a classic in the literature of World War II, a first-person chronicle of the glory - and the inevitable tragedy - of a superb soldier fighting Hitler's war.

Fascinating and compelling
It's not often you get to see, or in some people's cases not even want to, a German take on the horrific events of WW2 but this book is just that.
I found it fascinating to see the conflictions of a clearly very well educated man who clearly loved life and all that the world could offer him culturally and the job he had to do for the Nazis.
The whole story was a superb listen and I'd recommend it to anyone who has an interest in either WW2 or just autobiographies in general

Scope of experience incredible
To listen to a participant from the first day of the war to almost the last with experiences to relate from so many theatres in Europe is almost incredible. The style is factual without much in the way of opinions on why, who or how perhaps wisely. Very authentic first hand without the gruesome details in most cases. The sheer horror of all out war as well as some of the unusual sometimes humorous individual experiences mixed with pathos made this a fascinating listen. At times it makes you stop and enjoy the small things that you take for granted. Well worth your time.

Brilliantly written.
Loved it, sometimes real life truly is stranger than fiction. It goes to show that the bonds of friendship and comradery are the same whichever side of war you fight on.

Unique War and Post War Memoir
My only slight reservation is that the sound level was slightly quiet.
Otherwise Luck's account was revelatory to me particularly in terms of the professionalism and approach of the Wehrmacht and Luck himself through all of the arduous situations they went through. If only they had stood up to the Nazis!

A very good listen
I was a bit hesitant when purchasing this book, since it was a narrative authored by a former Wermacht colonel. I had read or listen to other books depicting the German side of WWII, but it still felt weird. Now, having listened to the full book, I am quite happy that I did buy it.
The book is rather addictive, especially during the latter part, where the narration of the battles Hans von Luck participated after D Day - defending France and then Germany in the western front and then the eastern front.
Probably it's easy to look at former German soldiers as Nazi soldiers, but this book tells a compelling story that may lead a reader (or listener) to view things differently. Hans von Luck himself establishes that difference, while giving us a human, dignified and honorable view from the "other" side. Highly recommended.

A different perspective
I loved this. It's an amazing story of perseverance, adversity, humility and duty...told from the perspective of the other side.

A very interesting story!
A very interesting and different approach compared to most war memoirs. He is obviously very modest of his achievements as a combat leader and of his time leading fellow POWs. I would throughly recommend for anyone with WW2 or leadership interests.
