About this listen
The world died long ago.
The world died long ago, leaving only a few here and there to rebuild. Their world had once been grand and magnificent, but too much was lost in the years after the time known as the Dying. Knowledge that had been gained over centuries disappeared from the world, lost when those who carried that knowledge died with it.
The population has grown again over the last centuries, but the world has not regained its lost knowledge or former glory. A few things survive, here and there, and scholars seek to uncover more of their Ancients lost technology. But in the midst of that comes the threat of war with a rival nation. The latest in a long line of such wars for the Kingdom of Soulan.
Enter Parno McLeod, third son of King Tammon McLeod, who is unloved by his family and laughed at by the nobility. A brawling, drinking, womanizing playboy still in his teens, the common soldiers and people love Parno because he doesn't preen and pretend and Parno loves his people and his Land, even though he doesn't love his family.
When sent away by his family on an impossible mission, can young Parno overcome the odds and become the prince that destiny intends him to be?

excellent!
So good that I legends to it all in two sittings, only sleep stopping me listening in between. Whether you like this or not parrot comes down to whether you're a stickler for details or not. Whether you have a good mind or not. It's a classic fantasy war novel, it does not waste time going over all tiny details for things that don't matter much. That's not to say that they don't manage to get the feelings across well, he does a great job at saying a lot in few words. Slow the story is not, as am the boring stuff isn't explained over twenty chapters, the pacing is excellent. I would not say it is the greatest story in the world, yet one of my favourite listens I've had. I'm heading straight into book 2.
also must be noted that the narration is some of the best ice I've heard. Going so far as to changing characters voiceswhen they're eating etc. You can really tell when someone truly loves what they do.
it's included in plus, so you have nothing to lose in giving it a try. And try you should.

Couldn’t put it down.
The narrator pulls you right in to the emotion and turmoil of the story. Absolutely brilliant narration. Moved me many times throughout. The story is written in such a way that you care about the characters and are drawn in to their story and start to find yourself caring what happens to them. At times you are chearing in triumph and times you feel the emotion and sadness of war. The honour shines through. For me this is a do not miss book, story telling at it’s finest.

Brilliant
I have probably hundreds of hours with of listening audiobook listening to date across military sci-fi, fantasy, Lit RPG and other genres. This book surprised me with just how well written and performed it was, I genuinely lost sleep listening to ‘just one more chapter’ before bed. You won’t be disappointed.

Its a weird 5*
So the writing is just ok, the narration is passable, the storyline formulaic to such an extent that it feels utterly predictable ... and yet .... its a great listen, the hours (and there are quite a few) fly by in the company of Parno and his crew. First one was a freebie and I will happily buy the next in the series. Its wonderful warm comforting entertainment ... nothing deep or challenging here but a welcome companion

We all need to be a bit more Parno
As another reviewer I have read said "they'd lost sleep, with just 'one more chapter.." I can sympathise with that. I've certainly stayed up in bed, just to get the chapter finished or stayed in the car, waiting for there to be a suitable break to get out.
I love this book, so well performed and written. so engaging and a real, detailed account of 'medieval' style warfare. Every aspect such as the logistics supporting the fighting troops considered. Giving the listener a really good overview of the battlefield and considerations a leader must think about.
Parno sets a high example on what it is to be a great leader and man.
