Summary

SOMEONE IS WATCHINGSOMEONE SHE THOUGHT SHE COULD TRUSTSOMEONE DETERMINED TO MAKE HER PAY

On the surface, Anna Witherall has the perfect life. Married to her university boyfriend David, she has an enviable job, beautiful home, and gorgeous three-year-old twin daughters, Stella and Rose. Their competent and capable nanny, Maria, is practically part of the family.

But beneath the veneer of success and happiness, Anna is hiding a dark secret, one that threatens to unravel everything she has worked so hard to create. Only one thing is certain: to protect her children, she must betray them.

‘I devoured this beautifully written, intricately wrought and unique blend of spy thriller and domestic suspense. The twists keep coming, right down to that chilling last line’ ERIN KELLY

Critic reviews

"Compelling and complex – a compulsive read." (Harriet Tyce, author of Blood Orange)

"Everyone has an agenda in this intriguing exploration of deceit and duplicity, as Philby ratchets up the paranoia to Highsmithian levels." (Guardian)

"An enigmatic and slippery beast, a cool new generation of spy novel. Just as the characters play cat and mouse with one another, so does the author with her readers – it’s a guessing game right to the end and I turned the last page with my heart pounding. Recommended." (Louise Candlish)

I really wanted to like this

after reading an interview with the author, and there were good parts and it rollicked along. But by the end I disliked every character and when tears pricked drippy Anna's eyes for the umpteenth time, Maria said portentous again ( never known that adjective used outside English A level) and I kept muttering "show dont tell". Well.
However, it beat "When were Orphans" hands down and would probably make an entertaining tv series, with sex, spooks, affluence and a Mama Mia backdrop ...

Tantalizing

I am left hoping that book 2 is ready to be published tomorrow, I want to know what happens next please and soon.

I had to be strict with myself so that I could make the book last for more than one listen. Once I got into this it was hard to put it down, although I had to turn it off a couple of times just to take stock of what was happening.

It was very easy to be pulled into liking the characters then falling out with some of them because of their double dealing, or conversely not being attracted to a character then having more sympathy with them.

Impatiently waiting to find out what happens next .......

Great story, dodgy narration

I enjoy the story very much. Exciting and with a fun and complicating ending. But I found the narration to be very odd, with one narrator constantly pausing when there was no need to pause, speaking very slowly and being overly melodramatic when the story itself is dramatic enough. The narration was slightly improved for me by speeding it up considerably.

Disappointed

A lot of hype for this book had me looking forward to the read, but no
substance to the story. The characters are unbelievable as is the plot. The ending ? What ending? Was like the author suddenly ran out of time! Save your money!

Confusing missed opportunity

It seems as if the author set out to weave together an apologia for Grandpa Philby’s spying with a contemporary thriller, however this interesting premise turned into a dull confusing muddle.
I’m all for a twisty tale and timely revelations but it’s as if whole passages from chapter 61 onwards were deliberately put in the wrong place to try and build narrative tension. It doesn’t work as the story just falls apart and stops making sense.
Oh and the ‘Greek’ accent was distractingly wafty, sometimes sounding as English as the other narrator.
