About this listen
Regarded by many as the most luminous example of Twain's work, this historical novel chronicles the French heroine's life, as purportedly told by her longtime friend--Sieur Louis de Conte. A panorama of stirring scenes recount Joan's childhood in Domremy, the story of her voices, the fight for Orleans, the splendid march to Rheims, and much more. An amazing record that disclosed Twain's unrestrained admiration for Joan's nobility of character, the book is matchless in its workmanship--one of Twain's lesser-known novels that will charm and delightfully surprise his admirers and devotees.

A fascinating and engaging story
I know this is a fictional account, but I found it really interesting nonetheless as it does very well in painting a picture of those 2 years of Joan of Arc’s life and her character, as well as some of the historical events related to her.

An unusual masterpiece
Mark Twain considered this his masterpiece. It is certainly unusual in that there is no work of fiction of such antiquity which is so faithful to the truth. This is because Twain based it on the details of Joan of Arc's trials and rehabilitation investigation several of which were meticulous. I found the performance a strain at times because of the attempt at a French accent but I did appreciate the effort which must have been considerable. I share Twain's view that this is a story of someone who was far more impressive than others who conquered much, but also of someone who was more angelic than almost any figure in history.

Respectful to Saint Joan
Because Twain was not a Catholic, I was suspicious of how authentic this book is. He uses some poetic licence and makes a few jabs at the clerics, but generally it is a very good and moving book. Twain was right to consider it his greatest work. Well read in too.
