Chamisso verwendet in seiner 1814 erschienen Erzählung eine Fülle alter Märchen- und Sagenmotive: Der Name der Hauptperson ist hebräischen Ursprungs; an den Namen Theophilus knüpft sich auch die Sage vom Pakt mit dem Teufel (Gottlieb - Theophil); das Motiv des Mannes ohne Schatten beruht auf einer Begegnung mit Fouqué.
Schlemihl, der seine Geschichte dem fiktiven Herausgeber Chamisso in elf Briefen erzählt, verkauft danach seinen Schatten und ist von da an von der Gesellschaft ausgeschlossen. Die Beobachtungen und Erfahrungen, die er auf seinem Gang mit Siebenmeilenstiefeln durch die Welt macht, hält er zum Nutzen der Gesellschaft schriftlich fest.
