About this listen

After Elizabeth Bennet refuses Mr. Darcy's offer of marriage, it takes a heavy toll on him. He withdraws to London and disappears near the docks, away from family, friends, and acquaintances. When he is mistaken for an escaped pirate, he is thrust into an adventure he would never have imagined. Will this be what he needs to forget the one woman he had come to love?

When her aunt and uncle have to cancel their plans to tour the Lake District, Elizabeth Bennet has the opportunity to sail to the Isles of Scilly with her father. After a pleasant visit, the voyage home brings storms, a shipwreck, and pirates! When she is rescued by gallant Captain Smith, she finds herself inexplicably drawn to him. What will she do when she discovers he is the very man whose offer of marriage she refused just a few months earlier?

Suspend your disbelief and enjoy the ride!

Picking up from canon P&P after Elizabeth Bennet has rejected Darcy’s first proposal at Hunsford, we find he’s taken it rather hard. Actually, more than hard. He’s “let himself go” so much that he’s arrested whilst in a drunken stupor and mistaken for a notorious pirate. Fortunately, someone in authority believes his tale and persuades him to impersonate aforementioned pirates so that the miscreant can be put away for good. For someone for whom “disguise of every sort is my abhorrence”, Darcy has a little trouble getting into character to start with.

Elizabeth Bennet, instead of going on a summer tour with her Aunt and Uncle Gardiner, ends up going on a trip to the Isles of Scilly with her father to visit an ailing relative. She meets some other relatives, including a young man named David who seems rather taken with her. On their journey back, cue real pirates and pretend pirates! That’s as far as I’ll go with the storyline. The rest is up to you.

At first, the premise does seem rather unbelievable but if you can get past that, you’ll have a really good time with this listen. One or two swoon worthy moments between E and D and a number of swashes buckled including a sword fight. Ms. Louise is a great storyteller in this genre and this work is no exception. Ms. Collana performs the narrative and characters well. It’s rather a shame she hasn’t done more like this.

Highly recommended.
