يبدأ الجدُّ "كامونقة" الحكاية فيلتفُّ حوله رجال القبيلة ونساؤها وأطفالها ليتلقفون حديثه الذي لا ينتهي عندما يبدأه كالعادة بقصّة اختطافه وسوقه إلى زريبة العبيد حيث يبيعه النخّاس التيجاني إلى تاجر سمسم فيغدو خادمًا مُطيعًا وحافظًا لأسرار سيده، يستمرُّ الجدُّ في قصِّ الحكاية كيف تزوَّج من الجدّة التي كانت تُباع في سوق العبيد أيضًا وكيفَّ فرَّ مع عائلته إلى قبيلة المجانين وزرع سهل الرَّمل الأصفر بالفول السوداني الذي كان يستخدمه قطّاع الطّرق والجلّابة لإغواء الأطفال وسرقتهم ثمَّ بيعهم.

بعد ذلك تتولى "رحمة" حفيدة الجدّ إكمال الحكاية لكنّها تنتقل من السودان إلى الجزائر وإسبانيا حث بيعت إلى التاجر البرتغالي ساراماغو، وتصف خلال حكايتها ما يلقاه العبيد من احتقارٍ وذلّ، وكيف أنّ السوط هو وسيلة كلام السادة معهم، وكيف تمَّ حبسها في حظيرة الماعز مراتٍ عديدة لكنّها في لحظة حريّة تتحوّل إلى مهرةٍ جامحة وترفض عبوديتها ولونها الأسود..

وقد فازت هذه الرواية بجائزة كتارا للرواية العربية المنشورة للعام 2017
