About this listen

It's 1939, and the Brogan family of London's East End are ready to show Hitler what for. But things don't seem so rosy when rationing, evacuation and air raids start to put this larger-than-life family to the test. When a mysterious young man arrives at the Brogans' local parish church, he provides just the dazzling distraction they need – and for eldest daughter Mattie, the promise of more than she'd ever wished for. But as the pair fall deeper in love, they are drawn into secret dangers, rife on the very London streets they call home. As the young couple race to protect the East End as they know it, can their dreams survive the darkening backdrop of war time ...?©2017 Pocketful of Dreams Jean Fullerton (P)2018 Bolinda Publishing Coming of Age Contemporary Contemporary Romance Family Life Fiction Genre Fiction Historical Historical Fiction Romance War & Military England Military

Superb

Great characters, the women in the book are really likeable, especially queenie. The other women character are not to goody two shoes, which I can't bear they have backbone and guts. This book is the start of the brogan family saga when the books go to the ration book series.

Great book good story

This is just a lovely story of life in the east end of London during WW2.

Oh what a lovely War story.

I couldn’t stop listening to this, I’m not sure how I missed it when I first began reading ‘A Ration Book Childhood’ a couple of years ago. This story was written in such a way that it felt like it all really happened. As though the characters were real. Jean Fullerton is such an underrated writer. This story in particular could’ve been a movie, easily.
Also, much appreciation & applause must go to the very talented narrator who was so convincing with those accents that I forgot they were all produced by the same woman. This is quite the praise considering how many male characters were depicted! Well done

Absolutely fantastic! Gripping and shocking in equal measure

This book is a lovely read with a good and at times exciting story line. The author has obviously done her research on this era and it really shows us how hard life could be during the war.
The performance was good, but some of the voices she chose to were annoying and didn’t seem to be how I imagined the characters to sound like. But overall a good performance and it doesn’t put you off the story .
Worth a listen.

A thoroughly enjoyable listen. Billie Fulford Brown was a clear narrator with a good amount of voices and accents to use to bring out the individual characters.
I also admired Jean Fullerton's writing style and will look out for other books by this author.

A gripping storyline.
