About this listen

The clock is ticking…

For Detective Chief Inspector Ryan, the stakes have never been higher. Most of the world thinks he’s dead, killed by an assasin's rifle in his own home. But another man took the bullet intended for him, and now Ryan’s living on borrowed time. As long as he stays ‘dead’, in the sanctuary of his parents’ home in Devon, there’s a chance to find the people behind the deadly killing network. It’s only a matter of time before his secret’s uncovered, and nowhere will be safe.

Back in Northumberland, Ryan’s team are called in to investigate the mysterious death of a man in Alnwick, who collapsed yards from the walls of its Mediaeval castle. When a second person is rushed to hospital with the same symptoms, her life hangs in the balance unless they can discover the toxic substance that’s killing her. For DCs Lowerson and Reed, there’s only one place to look for inspiration—the Poison Garden…

Murder and mystery are peppered with romance and humour in this fast-paced crime whodunnit, set amidst the spectacular Northumbrian landscape.

I love this series and the world that LJ Ross has created. The character dynamics and the life that Jonathan Keeble brings to them are what make it for me. Started and finished in one day and can’t wait for the next. Great to have the gang back!

Expected standard!!

The characters were likeable and well drawn. The performance was very good with different accents and intonations which made the story come alive. I didn’t find the story itself particularly gripping; it was sometimes slow and a bit “Midsomer Murders”. Maybe I should have started at the beginning of the series.

loved all of it and enjoyed the narrator. great with accents and humour. look forward to more

Unusual plot

I am usually a big fan of the narrator but the Irish lilt of Denise was not the same as in previous books - I found that annoying. The same happened in the previous book where a character from early books, who reappeared, had a totally different voice. Shame.

Excellent follow up to the previous book.

Loved the brilliant narrator and enjoyed the continuing storyline. Looking forward to the next book.
