About this listen

Nicholas Herman (c. 1605-1691) was born in Lorraine, France and served as a cook and shoe repairer at a Carmelite monastery. He was only a lay member of the order, and walked with a limp from injuries incurred as a soldier, yet his private thoughts provide a wellspring of devotional insight and refreshment.Public Domain (P)2008 christianaudio.com Christianity Spirituality

This is a super book and it’s well read. I was given the paper back version quite providentially and drank it in, it’s very powerful.

Excellent book well read

Brother Lawrence found God through a broken and dysfunctional body. He was mentally free despite the nature of his physical suffering. Grace accompanied him on every step of his journey - even when rolling over objects because his leg did not work properly. Herein lies the essence of the lesson - we are free when we chose to be. Peace and love to all who read these words.

I took issue with the last section, where there was advice about not using a physician and relying directly on God. this is dangerously heretical. God works through Doctor's.

great narration and advice about chasing with God

I slowed the speed of narration in order to use these letters as contemplative prayer.
Rich and deep and while I did not agree with some of His statements, I found Brother Lawrence inspiring a hunger in me to seek His presence.

Peace through contemplation in His presence
