Summary

From Prince's superstardom to studio seclusion, this second book in the award-winning Prince Studio Sessions series spotlights how Prince, the biggest rock star on the planet at the time, risked everything to create some of the most introspective music of his four-decade career.

Duane Tudahl takes us on an emotional and intimate journey of love, loss, rivalry, and renewal revealed through unprecedented access to dozens of musicians, singers, studio engineers, and others who worked with him and knew him best - with never-before-published memories from the Revolution, the Time, the Family, and Apollonia 6. Also included is a heartfelt foreword by musical legend Elton John about his time and friendship with Prince.

Finally, a book to do this great artist justice!!

This book is in fact the authors second book about Prince, this book is a chronology of princes recording between the years 1985 and 1986. It breaks down in each chapter month by month. The recording processes (i.e. the studio time right down to dates, times what's released and what isn't. These minute details may seem inconsequential to a passing fan but to anyone who has a deep affiliation with Prince and his music and the need to understand what it was like to be him, to work with him and to try and understand some of the inspirations and the events that were shaping Princes life at the time of these recordings.

The book takes you on a magical journey of someone's rise and rise to musical excellence after purple rain. The author has spoken to friends, recording engineers, musicians to get an idea what it was like to be in the studio with Prince, to be his friend and also at times his enemy. There are so many wonderful stories encapsulated in this book, which goes some way to help us understand where Prince was at emotionally at this time in his career. The author paints an excellent picture through articulate interviews painstaking research, which only serve to add a fantastic dimension to an excellent story.

You can tell by the way, this book is written that this book, as with his previous book has been a labour of love, dare I say it also necessity the need to get out to the world who Prince was, and to try and explain why he did what he did and the author doesn't excellent job in explaining that through the numerous people he interviewed who were there at pivotal moments in this period. I really do believe this book and the author's previous work on Prince us so musically important and I cannot stress enough that this is probably the greatest book on Prince I have ever read. I really do hope that audible see fit to release the authors first book on Prince and subsequent books from this author on this subject as they are so important to open up this author's work about this musical genius who is so much more than purple rain.
My personal favourites stories are those of Princes charity work and the continual fight for the underdog, which I really appreciated and even then you would only know that Prince did this work, unless you knew him very well. Or, like me, only found out after he passed.

If you want to know what it was like to work with Prince read this book

If you want to know what it takes to pursue your dreams read this book

If you want to know how Prince made era defining music, read this book.

a must read for prince mega fans

amazingly detailed account of an interesting time in princes career. i almost wish this book carried on to cover the rest of his career. my only gripe was that the listing of tracks, personel and timings became a little annoying but the narrator did a great job.
