About this listen

Princess Diana is seen as the first member of the British royal family to tear up the rulebook, and the duchess of Cambridge is modernizing the monarchy in strides. But before them was another who paved the way.

Princess Mary was born in 1897. Despite her Victorian beginnings, she strove to make a princess' life meaningful, using her position to help those less fortunate and defying gender conventions in the process. As the only daughter of King George V and Queen Mary, she would live to see not only two of her brothers ascend the throne, but also her niece Queen Elizabeth II.

She was one of the hardest-working members of the royal family, known for her no-nonsense approach and determination in the face of adversity. During the First World War she came into her own, launching an appeal to furnish every British troop and sailor with a Christmas gift, and training as a nurse at Great Ormond Street Hospital.

From her dedication to the war effort, to her role as the family peacemaker during the Abdication Crisis, Mary was the princess who redefined the title for the modern age. In the first biography in decades, Elisabeth Basford offers a fresh appraisal of Mary's full and fascinating life.

An outstanding Royal

Very informative insight into the Princess Royals life. Sadly the narrator was a poor choice, very grating dull voice with too many Americanisms (Bucking-Ham Palace)

Facts and figures

Shame this book is just facts and figures. Mary seemed such a decent, down to earth person. Author says difficult to write more indepth due to little info gleaned from her diaries.
Shame and that is the only reason I gave 3 stars for story.
I got fed up of the facts and dates, there was just so much of it. Mary certainly worked hard. Just wish could know more about her.
Narrator reads well, so made it easy to listen to.

Informative

Good clear narration. Found the book most informative. Provided an excellent insight into the first half of the 20th century in U.K. and royal family

Informative

Good writing...informative.... ruined by an awful narrator. Unpleasant voice...painful on the ear....has no clue about appropriate intonation.... or phraseology.....disappointing...

Disappointing and boring

I was looking forward to learning more about this now shadowy member of the Royal Family. Unfortunately the reader who has both an ugly voice and a droning delivery, made a rather superficial and monotonous book a dreary listen. As a consequence does this interesting Princess no justice.

Disappointing

Very disappointed that I just can't listen to this voice - it sounds quite unnatural
