Summary

How to live happily and well with endometriosis, from someone who has tried everything and lived to tell (and laugh at) the tale.

What the internet can tell you about endometriosis:

Endometriosis is a chronic and incurable condition that affects 1 in 10 women with approximately 1.6 million sufferers in the UK alone, but only 20% of the general public have heard of it. It takes an average of seven-and-a-half years to get a diagnosis in the UK and affects sufferers' capacity to work, their fertility and their ability to enjoy sex.

What Eleanor Thom can tell you about endometriosis:

You are so much more than the sum of your private parts.

Part memoir, part guide book and part survival guide, Private Parts retraces Eleanor's own journey with endometriosis, offering listeners practical, down-to-earth and friendly advice covering everything from what actually happens in an internal exam, to finding the right specialist for you, the perfect post-op wardrobe and to why you should look to Frida Kahlo for inspiration in your darkest moments.

Written for those looking to live well with their endometriosis and for those who are looking for help to understand the disease and how it affects those with it, Private Parts is a call to action for people to speak up about an illness which is still so misunderstood.

a very insightful glimpse into a painful disease

I'm a medical student who's partner suffers from endometriosis. she recommended this book as it matched her experience. It made me laugh, cry, and blow steam out of my ears with anger. I've recommended it to colleagues and patients alike. Hopefully things will change in the future and we'll have a better way to treat this condition, but until then we can all do better to treat the patient.

Extraordinary!

Eleanor Thom has a “jumble sale of a mind” laden with treasures that I’d rummage around in any day. A superbly written book read with warmth and wit. More from this insightful, funny and kind-hearted writer!

Informative and brave

This book is honest and helpful. It breaks down the different stages of symptoms, diagnosis and treatment in a way that you can dive in and out of. Although at times it is a tough read due to the impact this illness has on life, it encourages the reader to want to learn more, to be angry at the underfunding for this illness and the lapse in knowledge amongst professionals. The writer guides you through taking control of your illness, encouraging you to be your own specialist and empowering you to speak up for your health needs.
I will be recommending this book to all friends and would love to see a copy in every medical centre, school and library. I will also be encouraging medical staff to take the time to read it, if only to acknowledge that kindness goes a long way when supporting someone who is in pain.

Buy this book! You won't regret it

The best book I have read on Endometriosis and one of the best books I have ever read. I highly recommend this audiobook if you have Endometriosis. It will make you laugh, it will make you want to cry but you will finish the book feeling like you're no longer alone. Such an amazing listen.

humour and serious nature

reader keeps you engaged, very informative and light humour to counteract the negative aspects of endometriosis. I would have however liked to see more light shed on endometriosis infertility and those permanently childless not by choice due to endometriosis seen as 40 percent of childless sufferers is due to Endo quite a high percentage and is a reality for those 40 percent of individuals.

Raw, unapologetic emotions.

This book isn't for the light-hearted. This is a real life story on coping with an incurable disease. Thom takes you through her journey; there are bleek times, sad times and dark times, but she still shows courage, guidance and information on her coping methods on how to get through it. This is a must for sufferers of endometriosis, as a useful guidance and to get that much needed empathy. For non-sufferers, it's great to learn about new things and above all, it's just great to hear someone's story. 5/5, no question.

This is essential - Thank you Eleanor

Endometriosis really is a lonely disease, but this book helped me feel less alone. It felt like someone else was speaking my mind.

If you have endometriosis or support someone who has I recommend you listen to what Eleanor has to say. Sufferers of endo are all different, but we all have so much in common. Recommend your closest listen or read this book, it may help you if you are tired of the endless questions and assumptions.

Thank you Eleanor, you did as you said, your book is a friend when I needed someone. I didn't speak, but I felt heard. I wish I could buy you a gluten free beer. x
