About this listen

FROM THE BEST-SELLING AUTHOR OF THE SUPERVILLAINY SAGA

What if all the villains of slasher movies were real? What if the movies made about them were just adaptations of real-life killers with supernatural powers? This is a fact known to William and Carrie because their father, Billy the Undying, was one of the worst slashers of all time. So much so that they've spent the past decade in an asylum out of fear they'd end up just like him. Escaping, the two have decided to form a new life on the road. Except, a chance encounter in a dingy diner introduces William to the girl of his dreams.

Too bad she's a girl on a mission to kill all slashers. But maybe the best way to catch a supernatural serial killer is with another pair of them.

Enjoy this exciting prequel to the United States of Monsters books!

Funny and written with a deep love for the subject

C. T. Phipps is a delight as an author. Funny and richly detailed writing.
My wife over heard some of this book. And hearing the jokes and references to slasher films and true crime: she made me restart the whole thing so we could listen together. This book is a bit like discworld for murderinos. My only criticism is the plot is too brisk at the end. However I might just have wanted the book not to end.
In general if you find Phipps has written in a genre you like then know you are in a safe pair of hands.

Fast and fun, whether a slasher fan or not.

I've never been a huge fan of slashers, but they to lend well to parody so I was curious to see where slasher and comedy end up. I wasn't expecting this as a release/series (maybe) and it was an offbeat read/listen at breakneck speed.

Insane siblings seem a stereotype, but not when it inhibits them being a slasher and that unleashes the author's cornucopia of movie fondness. The ghostly father and supernatural element are a neat touch. The Spirit of the Hunt is a truly diabolical concept, far different from The Dresden Files and that is before the serial murders/supernatural and aversion to swearing, mysterious cults and organisations that lurk behind a seeming repressed explosion of nerdism... that even a non-slasher fan can pick up within the space of a couple of entertaining chapters and be left with an image of an Unmagnificant Seven.

Despite the pace, time is taken to detail in characters, cause and setting, thought the dialogue-heavy nature may not suite everyone's taste as the plot thickens, murders and rescues are planned and you are left with a couple of options on which way the inevitable betrayal and best laid plans drop apart. It ties in well with the author's other enterprises, and I particularly enjoyed the link-in with the Red Room trilogy. The siblings do appear to be a nod to Ben Affleck's Accountant and Harley Quinn without tripping over copyright infringement, but keeping in a few nods to episodes I've seen on Supernatural for an ending of blood, fire and dismemberment while keeping in the offbeat humour, or hamming it up.

It is a good laugh, in print and audio, and if anything I prefer the latter. Well worth a punt of anyone's dosh, for an amusing romp of stabbyness and mirror smashing.

C T Phipps best book yet

I love Phipps's work and own most of his audiobooks but this one tops all of them by a mile.

The plot maintains a really good pace throughout and manages to keep a good balance of character development and world building while still progressing the story.

Jeffrey Kafer is as ever a gift to the world of narration and should be declared a national treasure and be protected at all costs

“I’m allergic to flaming death demons and armies of goblins”

Brilliant!
Fast paced action, snark and a great story. Had me smiling from start to finish!
Great narration too; perfectly suited to this style of writing.
Really hope there’s more to come!
This is my honest opinion on a free review copy.
