Summary

If the world as you know it ended today, how would you survive?

After a sudden mysterious disease is unleashed on the country, claiming millions of lives, including that of his family, Mark is left alone. The cities are in chaos with survivors killing for food and water. Knowing as supplies dwindle the insanity will spread to his neighborhood, he creates a fortress in the basement of his suburban home, stock piles food, water, weapons, and medical supplies, and stays out of sight during the day.

Weeks later, the deadly street gangs have been organized, becoming a more dangerous and brutal army. In methodical fashion, they begin a neighborhood-by-neighborhood search, stripping houses and businesses of anything useful, killing those who stand in their way and enslaving the rest.
Mark knows if they find him they will kill him and works to not only stay hidden, but conceal his stash of supplies. However, when a woman and her family are trapped by the horde, Mark attempts a daring rescue, and becomes the focus of a deadly manhunt.

Trapped and outnumbered, the killers closing in. Mark must find a way to keep them all alive.

A fast-paced action thriller.

Mark, what a Hero!

I really like this book, it was full of non-stop action from beginning to end. It definitely kept my attention so much so that I binge played it all the way through to the end in one day. 'Mark' the main character is a total hero in every sense with a likable persona. But I have to say that a couple of the actions taken at the end by Mark and another character seemed very unrealistic to me (in terms of the security of their homes going forward). The story carries a gentle romance which I appreciated considering the hardship each person had gone through. Be warned there are moments of rape & violence directed at women from the 'bad men' in this book which I wish wasn't so prominent. However there are lots of heart warming interactions between most of the characters reminding us that despite the dystopia, there good human beings out there. The narrator performed extremely well. Sometimes on audio books I get distracted from the storyline because the narrator/actor just isn't very good, whether it be a monotone voice, inability to perform a passable female voice if male, etc. However this narrator brought life to the story and easily managed all the different voices and personalities of the various characters. I look forward to reading book 2. I was given a copy of this book for free of my choosing and have voluntarily left this review.
