Summary

Malibu, California, - home to rock-and-roll gods and movie stars, the beautiful, the rich...and vampires.

Powerful and charismatic, Raphael is a Vampire Lord, one of the few who hold the power of life and death over every vampire in existence. Thousands call him Master and have pledged absolute loyalty on their very lives. But when, in a brazen and deadly daylight attack, a gang of human killers kidnaps the one female vampire he'd give his life for, Raphael turns to a human investigator to find his enemies before it's too late.

Cynthia Leighton is smart, tough, and sexy - a private investigator and former cop who's tired of spying on cheating spouses and digging out old bank accounts. When Raphael asks for her help in tracking down the kidnappers, Cyn's happy to accept. But she soon realizes her greatest danger comes not from the humans, but from Raphael himself.

Battling Russian mobsters and treacherous vampires, and getting betrayed by those they trusted, Cyn and Raphael find themselves fighting for their lives while caught up in a passion of blood and violence that is destined to destroy them both.

A fun listen.

This book has all the needed elements to a great paranormal romance: strong female lead that doesn’t simper or cower, great world building, great action, an engaging and coherent storyline and a believable romance that isn’t too mushy.
My one complaint is the mispronunciation of Raphael’s name. I decided to confirm just in case I was wrong but even in Russian or Yiddish the name Raphael does not sound anything like how the narrator says it. It doesn’t ruin the book but it’s distracting and strange because it’s not an unusual name so it makes little sense why it would be spoken that way. Perhaps there is something I don’t know. Either way the book itself ticks the boxes. Looking forward to the rest of the series.

Loved it - a new vampire series to devour

I love a new vampire series. I had some audible credits built up so took a chance on Raphael, it didn't disappoint!

Raphael a vampire leader, is strong, as you would expect. He is also arrogant and bossy but there's more to him especially once he meets Cyn.

Cyn, well I loved her spirit, and strength and how she finds a way to add humour or is it sarcasm into her run-ins with Raphael - I think it's both.

Cyn is a private investigator, she gets a new job working for Raphael. There's obviously chemistry between the two of them and yes that boils over to a not-very romantic coming together....

I wouldn't say there's love between the two but feelings definitely stirring between the two among the mystery and action.

This is a new vampire world to explore and the vamps are not hidden away, except in sunlight they're traditional in that way.

I have to say I really enjoyed this audiobook, the narrator did a good job of getting the characters across along with a great storyline.

I have grabbed the audio of book 2, and can't wait to start it.

A deliciously, sexy, gritty, violent and dark hero

5 star series opener with a gritty & dark hero & take no prisoners heroine. A great antidote to the ‘Twilight effect‘.

‘Raphael’ is The first book in D.B. Reynolds' paranormal romance Vampires in America (VIA) series.
Reynolds weaves a good plot with complex and flawed characters that are as deadly and violent as they are sexy and seductive. This novel, and indeed the rest of the series are not for those who like their PNR sweet and cozy, but if you can handle a darker more violent side to romance and like your vampire lovers with edge then 'Raphael' and the 'VIA series' is definitely for you.

Raphael is a powerful, old and darkly seductive vampire lord, one of only eight vampire lords in America. Cyn is the human private investigator reluctantly tasked with finding the humans involved in the kidnapping of Raphael's sister. Raphael hasn't found a human interesting in many years, but something about the feisty PI Cyn draws him like no other, making him determined to have this woman who continues to deny him.

Cyn knows she needs to tread lightly, being the PI of choice for the vampires of Malibu doesn't prepare her for working for a vampire lord and definitely not when the lord in question haunts her dreams and insists on working alongside her.

GREAT VAMPIRES

If you could sum up Raphael in three words, what would they be?

Strong alpha male

What was one of the most memorable moments of Raphael?

When he and cyn start to realise that they are falling in love

What does Traci Odom bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

I have read all of this series of the american vampires
The stories are great and as soon as i read one book i bought the next one to read .
It is a hard book to get the characters right .
But traci seems to have got into this book and got the personalities right .

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

This series had me holding my breath ,making me frightened ,cry and laught

Any additional comments?

I would of liked to have been able to buy all of this series in audible. as having read the whole series in paperbackSo i am looking forward to seeing more of these books soon on audible

Good but not overwhelming

Would you consider the audio edition of Raphael to be better than the print version?

I don't know I have never read the print version.

Which character – as performed by Traci Odom – was your favourite?

I liked Cyn. The character would not have worked so well if she didn't have money. Traci Odom was good but took some getting used too as I recently heard her read another series which I loved and I found it initially difficult to hear her as Cyn and the other characters.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The very end when they were both at the airport unbeknown to each other.

Any additional comments?

The story is good, not to aggressive or sexual. The author has developed a detailed world which includes vampires etc. I will definately be buying the next in the series.
