About this listen
The first book in Adam Lofthouse's Enemy of the Empire series. An action-packed adventure set outside the boundaries of Ancient Rome.
'Raven: Defier of Rome is a book I wish I’d written!' - Michael Jecks
Chief Killer. Battle Turner. Oathbreaker.
Alaric is an enemy of Rome.
144 AD. Alaric Hengistson, leader of the Ravensworn, revels in his many fear-fuelled names whispered in the hearth flames. Cunning in battle, a ruthless war lord. He sleeps sound in the knowledge that he has been chosen by the Gods for a higher purpose – to rise up against the tyranny of an Empire.
For years he has thwarted Rome’s attempts to gain control over the land that has long resisted them. His land. Germania. However the rules are changing, and new deals are struck between the conquering Roman legions and the feuding Germanic tribes. Deals that could prove Alaric’s downfall.
As the eagles march with the wolves, together hunting the Raven, Alaric must prove his legend or watch his Ravensworn burn in flames.
A must read for fans of Bernard Cornwell, Matthew Harffy, Ben Kane and Simon Scarrow.
Praise for Raven: Defier of Rome:
'Raven: Defier of Rome is ideal for lovers of Ben Kane’s and Tony Riches’ Roman stories - this is the story from the other side of the shield wall. Blood, guts and glory for the man who stood against Rome!' Michael Jecks
'Raven offers a thrilling view of Rome and its interactions with the Germanic tribes. Highly recommended' MJ Porter
'Adam Lofthouse brings a Robert E. Howard Conanesque vigour and flair to historical fiction' Edoardo Albert
'Fast paced, full of action, with an anti-hero who deserves to live long in your memory!' Theodore Brun
'I was fully immersed in the vivid battle scenes' David's Book Blurg
'A vivid, Atmospheric and violent historical tale, full of action, tension and chicanery' Bookish Jottings
'Dark, gritty with vivid battle scenes' TBHonest

Excellent! Bring on book two!
An excellent story and an author I eagerly look to reading more of! I thoroughly enjoyed this and thought it was a breath of fresh air to read a story based on a “barbarians” perspective of how the Romans engaged with Germanic tribes, a real page turner!. Bring on the next book!
