Summary
Twenty million dollars' worth of missing gems bring Carrie Singleton's long-lost and larcenous dad back into her life, and it's up to Carrie to clear his name.
A devoted dad is as precious as diamonds, but Carrie Singleton wouldn't know since her dad Jim's been on the lam most of her life. In an unusual family reunion, she finds Jim breaking into her cottage in the middle of the night. The fun really starts when he begs her to help him recover his half of a 20-million-dollar gem heist he pulled off with the local jeweler, Benton Parr. When she refuses, Jim takes off again.
Carrie finds her father again behind bars for the recent murder of Benton Parr. Who made the connection? Unbeknownst to her, Carrie's boyfriend, Dylan, an insurance investigator, has been searching for the gems. Determined to find the jewels herself, she starts examining every facet of Parr's life. She turns up a treasure trove of suspects, one of whom bashes her on the head as she's searching the victim's country cabin.
Retreating to the quiet confines of the library where she works, Carrie watches as Smoky Joe, the resident cat, paws at a hole in the wall. Is he after the library's ghost, Evelyn, or something shinier?

Great author and fantastic narration
I love the way the narration has been done and adore the images it brings to the mind.

Not as good as 1st book
This book isn’t as good as the 1st in this series but it’s a good book to listen too.
I wasn’t too sure about the narrator when I 1st started the series but I do like her now and the story moves along nicely without too many issues.

A stupid heroine
Quite good story but I got so frustrated with her alternate aggression and sickly sweetness, topped with childish lack of emotional intelligence.

Overstretched, misleading, enjoyable.
The haunted library subtext is misleading. There is a ghost but her presence does not further the plot: she needs a stronger role; she doesn't help solve the crime. The premise is good but it doesn't work. The plot is ok. The ending is ok. Overall it is ok, but could be better. I like these stories but the drama needs to be heightened. Carrie is a bit wimpy; does it really matter that her boyfriend has to travel for his work; she has a job she enjoys, friends and family, and a cat. Overall a good idea but it needs more guts. Give the ghost a reason to haunt the library. The narrator is excellent. Annoying but enjoyable; I will try the next in the series. Continuity issues: Santa became a snowman.

A good read or listen
I am so glad I discovered this series because I am just loving it and this book is no exception. I love the library setting and all the workings that go on behind the scenes, definitely a place I would love to visit and so easy to imagine. I normally wish the author would just stick to the mystery side of a story and not get bogged down with home and love life drama but this author strikes the right amount of both and everything is so nicely woven together that it is fun and a pleasure to listen to. I also love the continuity of the different characters between the books, from library staff to family and having read the books out of order it means I have come to know them well and they feel like catching up with family. Carrie is a great main character and she has really grown into the role of head of events and planning as well as amateur sleuth. The mystery was interesting and had plenty of suspects, I thought I knew who the killer wasn't but I wasn't quite right. Can't wait to start the next book.
Carrie is excited to celebrate her Birthday and for new guest speaker to with a talk at the library, until her absent father returns into her life and asks for help getting his half of some stolen gems. The speaker is his partner and is refusing to give him his share. Carrie wants nothing to do with the gems or her father but when the speaker is found dead and her father is found standing over his body Carrie knows she can't just stand by and watch him get arrested. Even if it causes problems between her and her boyfriend, who is searching for both her father and the gems. Christmas is a busy time at the library for Carrie, as the events planner, but if she wants to have a Christmas to remember she will have to join forces with some of the dead man's family who just happen to be at the top of her suspect list, in order to find the hidden gems and clear her father's name. But with the body count rising and threats being made can she find the killer?
I liked the narrator. She sounds perfect for voicing Carrie and her friends and is a fun and entertaining narrator.

Laid back mystery
These are easy listens, perfect of you like a kind blood free police mystery that is uncomplicated and pleasant to listen to. Not too many characters to remember or too deep tangles. Just the right amount of everything to listen to while multitasking

Another fantastic story from Allison Brooks
I am really enjoying this book series, I saw someone else had said the name was a bit misleading The Haunted Library Mysteries. I agree that there is only one ghost, and she isn't a large element to the stories. But to be honest I don't know what to expect, it's not like Randall and Hopkirk (Deceased), although it could be and that would be good fun. I would like to see Evelyn have more input into the solving of the murders. I would also like to see her be able to interact with the library, have a Ghostbusters moment with books and items being moved on the shelves and chairs being put under tables. Carrie having to grab a coffee in mid air that's being moved. Alison walking in and seeing Carrie talking while the ghost is dictating a letter on the computer. Then Carrie and Alison start having text conversations with the ghost(s) on the computer and/or phone. A ghost uses someones mobile to take a cheeky photo!
