Critic reviews

"One of the most original and frightening storytellers of our time" (Peter James)
"This is Graham Masterton’s third novel featuring Irish detective Katie Maguire. A natural storyteller with a unique gift for turning the mundane into the terrifyingly real." ( New York Journal of Books)

Gritty crime thriller enfused with Irish wit

Would you consider the audio edition of Red Light to be better than the print version?

I have not seen the print version but found the audio version to be thoroughly engrossing

Who was your favorite character and why?

Det Supt Katie McGuire

Which scene did you most enjoy?

The detail in the opening scenes where the first body was found set a very high standard for the rest of the book

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

A Corker of a crime thriller

I will yeah!

Plus: female main character & Irish context
Minus: romance sub plot is just silly

The cork voice is authentic even if some of the views held about women in the police force are severely outdated - we have moved on!

Gripping!

What does Caroline Lennon bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

Caroline is usually an excellent narrator. Here, however, the emphasis and inflection was wrong many times. I was surprised, as I have listened to her several times before and this has never previously been the case. Of course the editing is also lacking for not picking this up. However, great ability still knocks spots of most narrators, so it still merits four stars.

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

Beware the anger of a woman.

Any additional comments?

This is a gripping listen/read. It is not for the faint hearted, as it is frequently quite gruesome. Sadly, I found Katie somewhat superficially drawn and this makes it a four star story, rather than a five for me. Nevertheless, I look forward to reading others in the series.

A Great Narrator!

I thoroughly enjoyed this book! The narrator helped, but I enjoyed the story & sometimes listened longer than I should have done!

DS Katie Maguire, was a credible character, except at the point when she allowed her mother-to-be to drive her car! I knew what was going to happen instantly. Also, who did it!

Myself. I might have turned my back & allowed that last killing! 🤷‍♀️

Takes me back to Cork.

Stories are always good, but finish too quickly. Narration is outstanding, really captures the Cork vocabulary brilliantly.

This didn’t grab my attention

This was a good listen, but not a great listen. I’ll stick with the series though as the previous books have been great. I love that the stories are based in Cork, as my family are from Cork
and I know lots of the places. I’d love Cork accents to be a feature though.

Have a strong stomach and a sense of humour

What made the experience of listening to Red Light the most enjoyable?

I really like the narrator, she makes Katie Maguire come to life, and transports you to Ireland. I enjoy the rather gory macabre type of criminal detective work and how the baddie "gets it" in the end. But thats my preference.

Any additional comments?

If you enjoy Stuart Macbride then you will enjoy this series. Start at the first book though, it introduces the characters. Make sure you have eaten first, unless you are on a diet. It puts you off your food a bit.

Hmmmm

So why is it all the women are “large breasted”
Why did Ailish have to die could she not have just been injured although that was a bit predictable and a shame for Katie’s dad

The story itself was good and made better by Caroline Lennon’s narration and she is the only reason I listened to this book
