About this listen

From the moment she’s struck by lightning as a baby, it is clear Mary Anning is marked for greatness. When she uncovers unknown dinosaur fossils in the cliffs near her home, she sets the scientific world alight, challenging ideas about the world’s creation and stimulating debate over our origins. In an arena dominated by men, however, Mary is soon reduced to a serving role, facing prejudice from the academic community, vicious gossip from neighbours, and the heartbreak of forbidden love.

Luckily Mary finds an unlikely champion in prickly, intelligent Elizabeth Philpot, a middle-class spinster who is also fossil-obsessed. Despite their differences in age and background, Mary and Elizabeth discover that, in struggling for recognition, friendship is their strongest weapon.

I was recommended this book, and I was very glad that I listened. The story was engrossing from the start and the beautiful narration only added to the atmosphere.

It is a believable story, with an interesting history, I was eager to find what happened, but didn't want it to end!

An excellent recommendation

Although the characters are strong and the set up interesting, it’s just a bit boring.

Not her best work

I loved this story which tells the tale of two remarkable women from a first person narrative perspective. I felt the balance between the narrators was good and the readers were well chosen for the characters.

The story revolves around the ground breaking dinosaur discoveries that Mary Anning made in the early 19thC. The struggles the womem face due to their sex is apparent throughout but not ocer dominating. I did wonder at times if the characters were not a little 'modern' in their thinking for the time period but this would be my only criticism.

A must listen for keen fossil hunters.

Story line is right up my street. The natural world, friendship and respect between women, historical fiction that teaches you something. So perfect. Narration spot on too. Loved it.

One of the best!

A wonderful book

As one always intrigued by ammonites, who loves beach combing & has long wanted to visit Lyme Regis again, this is a delightful & fascinating fictional account of the friendship between two ground breaking females, Victorian 'fossil collector' Elizabeth Philpott and 'fossil hunter', dealer & paleontologist Mary Anning; and, the latter's extraordinary discoveries along what is now known as the Jurassic Coast.
Author Tracey Chevalier's research again does her credit. I now want to learn even more about Mary, who has certainly never received the recognition she deserved for her finds & observations.
The story is beautifully narrated by Hattie Morahan, giving perfect voice in turn to both Elizabeth & Mary.

Fossils are remarkable!

I really enjoyed this audiobook. It is the third book I have read or listened to by this author. Strong characters.

Possibly the book I enjoyed most all year. Mary’s and Elizabeth’s extraordinary tale is unpacked with great sensitivity and insight. The author takes you right inside their thoughts and feelings, their dreams and aspirations and spins an exquisite story. It is beautifully crafted, immaculately researched and unpacked in such a way youeliciouy are totally and completely immersed in their world. I found myself rooting for them both, cheering their wins, worrying about their disunion, concerned they may never be in harmony again. The writing is deliciously crafted, the narration wonderful.

Superb

I thoroughly enjoyed this story which built a beautiful picture in my head of Mary Anning, Lyme Regis and the Philpot sisters. It made me appreciate the struggle of single women of that era and has left me wanting to listen to another Tracey Chevalier story!

Loved it
