About this listen

Callypso Lillis is a siren with a very big problem, one that stretches up her arm and far into her past. For the last seven years she’s been collecting a bracelet of black beads up her wrist, magical IOUs for favors she’s received. Only death or repayment will fulfill the obligations. Only then will the beads disappear. Everyone knows that if you need a favor, you go to the Bargainer to make it happen. He’s a man who can get you anything you want … at a price. And everyone knows that sooner or later he always collects. But for one of his clients, he’s never asked for repayment.

Not until now. When Callie finds the fae king of the night in her room, a grin on his lips and a twinkle in his eye, she knows things are about to change. At first it’s just a chaste kiss—a single bead’s worth—and a promise for more. For the Bargainer, it’s more than just a matter of rekindling an old romance. Something is happening in the Otherworld. Fae warriors are going missing one by one. Only the women are returned, each in a glass casket, a child clutched to their breast. And then there are the whispers among the slaves, whispers of an evil that’s been awoken. If the Bargainer has any hope to save his people, he’ll need the help of the siren he spurned long ago. Only, his foe has a taste for exotic creatures, and Callie just happens to be one.

It only gets going the last 1/4. So really had to stick with it. I felt the narration was a bit hit and miss especially where the accent was in place. The term “the siren in me” got a bit tiresome. I may read the next one, but it is not currently on my reading list!

Well that took a while

Gripped all the way through with excellent narrator. Amongst all the romantacy books out there at the moment this is one of the good ones.

Great narration! Gripping story. 🌶️🌶️

This is a dark romantasy book with focus on romance. I’d say it is 80% romance, 20% plot, which is quite a lot less plot than I’m used to. Personally, I would have loved it, if there was higher attention on what happened around the “Thief of Souls”, because I feel like that’s a very interesting idea. But maybe the story will shift focus more on the plot with the next three books in the Bargainer series.

This book has
⚔️ friends to enemies to lovers
🗣️ 1st person and single POV
🟰 dual timelines
🩶 morally grey MMC and FMC
🧚🏻 fae MMC and siren FMC
🪽 shadow daddy with wings
🌶️ spice (2/5, I’d say)
🌍 very limited worldbuilding (works for fantasy/romantasy newbies)

What the book is about:
Callypso (Callie) is a siren aka a human with psychic abilities. She can control the minds of every other human being. 8 years ago, she made a deal with the Bargainer and she’s the only one who knows his real name: Desmond Flynn.
She has over 300 deeds to fulfill, but Des hasn’t come to collect his repayment all these years. Now he’s back, not only to make Callie repay her depts, but also because he needs the sirens help. In the Otherworld fae warriors got missing, leaving behind children, that are not acting how they are supposed to.

It was very easy for me to get into the story. Especially the first few chapters gripped me. Then it kind of slowed down a bit and there is a lot of romance going on. There wasn’t anything about this book that annoyed or bothered me specifically, but as I prefer reading a good plot to a romance story, it was just too heavy on the romance for me.
I did like the story of Callie and Des. You slowly get to know what happened between the two of them all those years ago. It's not badly written at all. I liked the characters, especially Callie was my cup of tea. She’s a bit morally grey with good intentions. The spice was there but not overdone. There is a lykanthrop/werewolf side character, what I enjoyed too.

Loved the narrator.

80% romance, 20% plot

Really loved the story. Can’t wait for book 2 and more of Callie and Des. Also loved the narrators voice.

Definitely dark but great story. I really like strong fmc and the support of mmc. He might be problematic but their situation is not quite easy. The love is present as well as the suffering is. No victims, so much inner strenght and survival.

Entertaining

After a slow start with dual timelines, the story picks up. Fey are being taken and are returned, asleep in caskets, with babies that behave strangely. Despite asks Callie to help him solve the reason for the disappearances to pay off all of the bargains she has made with him. Really enjoyed this story and the developing relationship between the two main characters. The missing Fey plot was also great. Will definitely give the next book a go. Narrator is really good and it's always clear who is speaking. Will definitely look out for more by this narrator.

Enjoyable
