Summary

A year into her dream job at a cutthroat Silicon Valley startup, Cassie is trapped in a corporate nightmare. She struggles to reconcile the promise of a city where obscene wealth lives alongside abject poverty. Ivy League grads complain about the snack selection from a conference room with a view of houseless people bathing in the bay. Startup burnouts leap into the paths of commuter trains. Though isolated, Cassie is never alone. From her earliest memory, the black hole has been her constant companion. It feeds on her depression and anxiety, changing in size relative to her distress. Its relentless pull draws Cassie ever closer as the world around her unravels. When her CEO's demands become illegal and she ends up unexpectedly pregnant, Cassie must decide whether the tempting fruits of Silicon Valley are worth the pain, or succumb to the black hole.

A thin and shaky critique on capitalism

I think this comes down to personal preference but the story itself was nothing I hadn’t heard before. Would’ve made a good short story but the length of the novel was made up of hammering the point of “Capitalism bad” and “dissociation present”. Wouldn’t read again but the audio book performance was great. If I picked up a physical copy, I would have DNFd.

Bad novel even worst narration.

Self pity fest, really unlikable narrator but the worst of all it’s the narration, robotic and monotone. Wish I haven’t bothered.

Mediocre

This book is just complaints of the cog that is early adult hood / working. It would have been better had the protagonist actually found solutions to her problems

Great read

I loved this book. Beautiful writing and a worryingly realistic portrayal of millennial life in a big city. Definitely worth a listen!
