Summary
In order to save my father, I have to marry the God of Death.
When twenty-four-year old Hanna Heikkinen's estranged father dies, she reluctantly makes the trip to Northern Finland for his funeral. Being in the enchanting land of ice and snow feels miles away from Hanna's busy life back in Los Angeles, especially under the complicated circumstances.
But when Hanna discovers that her father's body is missing, that's when things really get weird. A mysterious man, Rasmus, tells Hanna the truth: her father was a powerful shaman who went into Tuonela, the Realm of the Dead, in order to barter for more life, and has been held captive by Tuoni, the God of Death. The only way her father can be freed is if she travels with Rasmus into the mythical underworld to rescue him.
Willing to do anything to have a second chance with her father, Hanna accompanies Rasmus into the dark and bloody realm, traveling via the River of Shadows, stalked by dangerous creatures, monsters, and the living dead, until they finally come into the haunted kingdom ruled by Death and his family.
Only for her to be captured and held prisoner by the God of Death himself.

An immersive read
I like the way the story unfolded and how you could visualise the characters and settings. I enjoy the other books and the series also.

A great Persephone & Hades retelling
I couldn't put it down, this story was epic and full good surprises. When Hannah goes to her father funeral she finds herself confronting magic, otherworldly creates and death himself. She starts to discover about herself, her father and death's kingdom as well as the God himself and she is perplexed, confused and captivated by it all. We get a few battles, some funny parts and some steam too.
The narration was really good, even if her voice had a certain melancholy to it. I think we needed 2 narrators )male and female) to make the audio part better. However, Jo Raylan did an amazing job with all the voices and how to best interpreting them.

different and thougherly enjoyable
enjoyed the narrators, and the story was different to what I usually like, but very enjoyable. The characters were all likeable and had strong roles.(Yes there's some s*x in here too, not too much but steamy) Will be listening to the next one.

Nah…
Honestly, the story didn’t make a lot of sense, and left gaps in the narrative that should have been answered. The main character is also just confused throughout. Couldn’t really get a grip of the characters either. Had some spicy scenes though. Would not recommend

Started strong, but lost interest
Lore and world building started strong but then pacing seemed slow till the end and lost interest. A little too much cursing for my taste
