About this listen
Back home in Surrey, Lucy fights the passions stirred in her by Italy and becomes very respectably engaged to the cultured Cecil Vyse. It promises to be a conventional life until, one day, Florence and all its accompanying emotion resurfaces in the form of young George Emerson. Torn between society's expectations and the stirrings of her quickening heart, Lucy struggles with her dilemma until her warring emotions reach an explosive climax.
E.M. Forster's portrayal of the richness of Italy and the contrasting formality of Victorian England are wonderfully evoked in this BBC Radio 4 full-cast dramatisation. Sheila Hancock stars.

Room for improvement
I was looking forward to this dramatisation but found myself somewhat disappointed and distracted by the 'overacting' by certain characters, if you can apply that term to radio dramatisation. Whilst the core story stands the test of time, for some reason many of the characters came across as too 'modern' for the period the story was portraying. Still worth a first listen though I won't put it amongst my favourites to listen to again (and again!).

CATHY SARA RUINS THIS WONDERFUL PRODUCTION
A beautiful piece of literature, one of my favourite drama’s UTTERLY RUINED by the overacting of Cathy Sara who is totally miss cast and not suited at all to the part. Could only manage to listen to half an hour of the 3 & half hours as Cathy is SO AWFULLY BAD. Total let down on a wonderful piece of literature.
