About this listen
Jane Carter Woodrow goes right back to the start of the infamous serial killer Rose West's life, to try to piece together what happened to turn her into the violent monster she became.
A gripping listen on the real story of Rose West who, together with her husband, Fred West, became Britain's biggest and most notorious murderers.
As seen on the Channel 5 documentary Making a Monster.
Although it's hard to believe now, Rose West was an exceptionally beautiful little girl with long, glossy dark hair and big brown eyes. Looking at photos of young Rosie as a child, it is almost impossible to comprehend that she would grow up to become one of Britain's most notorious female murderers. But Rose's early life made her the perfect partner for Fred West, and the two committed a string of murders in Gloucester throughout the '70s and '80s. Her part in the killings is very different to that which many people believe even today.
What happened to that little girl to make her capable of such violence? Or was there something wrong - a predisposition to cruelty - which she was born with?
Crime writer Jane Carter Woodrow goes back to the start of Rose's life to piece together what it was that turned her into a monster. In doing so, she presents us with a profile of the young Rose West and a fascinating insight into the mind of a killer.
Rose West is a gripping listen that sheds light for the first time on the real story of Rose West - taking the listener on a journey from her childhood through to her becoming the country's biggest and most infamous female sexual predator and serial killer.

Very interesting
The author did their best to make West appear like a species we might recognise but by the end of the book you realise this was an impossible task. It’s well written and detailed in ways I didn’t expect and worth the time to listen.

Wonderful narrator - interesting insights
I really enjoyed this! Woodrow has a beautiful turn of phrase and painted a picture (albeit a grisly one!) of Rose West and the West Murders. Paterson is a wonderful narrator, her voice is lyrical and I enjoyed the accents she used for various people. Definitely recommend

A chilling read
A challenge what to write when listening to this chilling book. A very difficult but bizarrely interesting read. Not for the faint hearted, with explicit distressing detail of the complex life or Rose, Fred and family. I hope survivors can learn to live again. And the poor departed soles find peace.

Worth a listen
Good narrator and expression but I did have to speed the narrator up voice droned in places. Good detail and understanding of the subjects and build up to their behaviours in adulthood.

utter depravity
the Wests are probably the most Abusive of parents, but they won't have been the only ones. When Fred's dad told him it's a father's duty to "break in" his daughters, and "everyone does it", I think paedophilia and incest are, or were, more common than we like to think.
things occur behind closed doors, and people who could say something don't.
sexual violence and DV is endemic, and people deny seeing it, deny knowing about it, disbelieve or blame victims.
The number of men passing through Cromwell St, and none of them said anything so long as they got what they wanted. Shameful.

Deeply disturbing
This book gives thorough background details about Rose and Fred West and their crimes, with the main focus being upon Rose. It is a shocking story, but the information is here in an accessible form. There are many insights to be gained from such a horrifying case.

Complete
This is by far the most comprehensive fully detailed book available. A far superior book than Howard Sounes “Fred and Rose” which by default is written and reads as a tabloid serial piece.
This book goes into the family tree that details the creation and truly horrific existence of the Letts family.

No holds barred account of a serial killer
A strong account of Rose West’s life a d her crimes. Well performed by the narrator. You want to hear more, at the same time as being appalled by the subject
