Winston Graham's first book in the Poldark series, Ross Poldark, is named after the hero of the tale! The book is set in the 18th Century.

Ross is a British Army officer who returns to Cornwall, from the American War of Independence, to find his father, dead; his estate derelict and the young lady he thought he was pledged to, engaged to his cousin.

After rescuing an urchin girl & takIng her home, he is considered even less worthy of keeping his place in society.

Eventually, as a young woman, she recognises her feelings for Ross.

I feel that the narrator let the book down.

With the new BBC & PBS co-production of Poldark in 2015, I was interested to revisit the series of books. It's been about 30 years since I read them, and find it most pleasing to find they still hold up. Brings back my love of Verity, Demelza, Cornwall and of course Ross.

After becoming a big fan of Poldark on TV I was unsure about listening to the book. It’s so beautifully written with humour and feeling. The narration was so good. I have thoroughly enjoyed listening and look forward to the next one

What made the experience of listening to Ross Poldark the most enjoyable?

I loved and read the Poldark series when I was a child so it was lovely to hear them again. The TV series is ok but you really do need to read or listen to the books as they have so much more of the history of the time and the background to Winston Graham wonderful characters (no scything sadly!). I can't recommend these adaptations strongly enough. Buy them and dive into 18th century Cornwall.

Really enjoyed this. I remember my mum reading the books as a child. I can visualise the coast, everything. A pleasure, can’t wait to read the next.
