Summary
Roth Masters is a protector to the bone. Driven by the losses of his past, he fights side-by-side with Hell Squad to protect the human survivors of the alien invasion. As leader of Squad Nine, he and his team are known for their perfect timing in a firefight. But Roth knows they need more intel on the raptor invaders - something to turn the tide of the battle. And he knows the woman he rescued from an alien facility is hiding secrets he desperately wants to uncover.
Former Coalition Central Intelligence Agent Avery Stillman is still adjusting to her new life. Left with terrible gaps in her memory, she has vague recollections of failed negotiations with the aliens, the invasion, and after that...nothing. Until a hard-bodied soldier pulled her from a tank in an alien lab. Now she's trying desperately to remember, to help fight back, and also battling the crazy attraction to the man who keeps pushing her for things she can't remember.
Soon Roth finds himself torn between his duty and keeping the strong woman he's falling for safe. As the pair head into alien territory to investigate, they are attacked and crash land alone, far from base. They have to work together to survive the aliens, but when Avery finally remembers everything...her secrets could annihilate all they hold dear.

Awesome
Once again another dramatic and intense story from this incredible series. These two narrators did a great job with all these books. Cannot wait for the next book now

There's more than one happy ending in this action

Updated Review for Audible Version
There's more than one happy ending in this action packed sci-fi romance. I absolutely loved it and can't wait for the next one.
I absolutely love Anna Hackett's stories, I've read quite a lot of them over the years, actually, everything she's written and she's one of my all-time favourite authors. Her stories never disappoint, and nor does this fantastic addition to the list of must read books. 'Roth' is the fifth book in the Hell Squad series and I absolutely loved this action packed romance set in and around the post alien invasion ruins of Sydney. When I originally read this book nearly five years ago now, I thought I'd just read a bit before breakfast, but it grabbed me on the first page and I really didn't want to put it down. I was so engrossed in this action packed story that I didn't notice the time passing or anything in the here and now until I got to the end, and I was left with a smile on my face and the distinct impression I'd not only missed breakfast, but lunch as well and it was getting dark. It's a good thing my partner can cook or I'd have missed dinner too. This audio version grabbed my attention in exactly the same way and I listened to it all day, but I did, at least, remember to eat this time with the added bonus that I didn't have to stop listening to do it..... Yay!!!
I re-read my favourite books on a fairly regular basis, but I now suffer from varying problems with my eyes, and I decided to give audio books another chance. I've mostly avoided them in the past because the narrators left a lot to be desired and generally ruined the books. Taking the literary equivalent of a nice, crisp, juicy salad with zing and turning it into something akin to a month-old limp lettuce leaf. I'm overjoyed to say that the two who narrate this series, Jeffrey Kafer and Samantha Cook are incredibly good, truly the exception rather than the rule. They managed to maintain the gritty fight for survival action adventure nature of the book and I highly recommend it to any lover of all-action, alien invasion sci-fi wrapped in a little romance with a few steamy bits for added spice. But, as this is a series with each story following on from the one before and having the start of the next story somewhere in the last chapter or two, I do suggest that you start from the first book, 'Marcus', and then listen to them in order. It'll be worth it and you get the survivors' story from the beginning-ish. The series is set around Sydney, the capital of the United Coalition of former Commonwealth nations and the USA, and actually begins about six months after an alien invasion which decimated the planet and killed billions in the first wave of the attack.
Although this book is part of the Hell Squad series, Roth Masters is actually the leader of Squad Nine, based at the Blue Mountain military facility. They do recon and provide back up on an almost daily basis for Squad Six, known to one and all as Hell Squad. Roth is angry, frustrated and desperately in need of something they can use to fight the Gizzida, the aliens who attacked Earth over a year ago. He thinks he knows who can help, but former United Coalition Central Intelligence Special Agent Avery Stillman has a memory which is more like a Swiss cheese since she spent a year in an alien tank, and has blinding headaches every time she tries to remember what happened. She can't remember anything after the initial negotiations with the aliens started and no amount of interrogation by Roth, the man who rescued her, will change that. But there is more going on between them than frustrating question and answer sessions, and they're both afraid to trust or care because of their past experiences. All will be revealed, as will the part played by The Enclave.
I'm not going to give any spoilers, but this is an absolutely terrific book with everything you could possibly want. It has humour, strong alpha males, as well as equally strong alpha females who are some of the best and toughest soldiers around, action, aliens and other bad guys to fight, survivors to rescue, traitors to be found and a steamy love story with a happy ending. It has another happy ending too, but I'm not going to say what it is. It did leave a smile on my face though. I loved it and can't wait for the next one.
5 more than well earned stars along with places on my 'read/listen again' and 'rescue if the house is burning down' lists.

Secrets and Lies
Squad Nine's leader Roth Masters is a protector to the bone and he would die for his team, for the band of survivors he fights for. But he knows fighting won't win the war, they need intel to drive the aliens away and he knows someone who may have the key, if only she can remember it.
Former Coalition Central Intelligence Agent Avery Stillman is now free from the aliens, but she knows that in her fragmented memory she holds important information. Information that is crucial to everyone's survival. She fights to remember whilst battling her growing attraction for the man who keeps pushing her for answers that she doesn't have. The gorgeous arrogant man who drives her crazy. The man who doesn't believe her!
On a mission, they are attacked and crash land alone. Roth will need to put everything on the line to protect the woman he is cares. A woman whose secrets could annihilate all they hold dear. A woman he would die for.
OMG the heat between Roth and Avery was enough to set my kindle on fire. This is another amazing Hell Squad book which provides a lot more information about the original alien invasion and pushes the story along nicely. More characters are introduced and that I can't wait to get to know better. Well done Anna.
