My personal experience...
1) Start with Pimsleur 1... get the pronunciation of the language in your head, the music of it... if you follow Pimsleur, those initially impossible words and phrases gradually lose their mystery and become embedded.
2) When you're halfway through Pimsleur 1, start Duolingo in parallel... it's great for learning to read (important!) and for vocabulary expansion.
3) Once you've gained some basics (month or two?), start conversation classes on Italki... no English, force yourself to struggle in Russian.
4) After a while, start attempting comprehension of real language: news (written or spoken) is generally the easiest way in.
Well, that's my strategy (based on other languages: I'm starting Russian now).
In other words: Pimsleur's just the start, but it's a brilliant start.
PS in disagreement with other reviewers: it's really not expensive for what it is.
Pimsleur is the best start..

But, it's also very good. It works for me and I'm usually bad at learning languages.
The only other minor point I would point out is that the 2 Russian speakers seem to sometimes pronounce the words in completely different ways; maybe this is intentional but it is never explained.
e.g. when the man says "ch" the woman seems to say a "ts" sound, and when the man says a "v" sound the woman sounds more like "b". the man says "Ya", the woman says "Ee-a", etc. I just assume that both are acceptable or are different regional pronunciations or similar.
Anyway I'm still going to buy the next one...
Easiest but most expensive way to learn Russian

and I've done this section (1 -5) over the course of a month.
I've replay each session daily, (so maybe a little over a month)
my russian friends can understand everything I've learned in this course.
(I found a friend on facebook who wants to exchange russian for English lessons, and we send each other voice messages and correct each other on words and pronouncements)
and I can't wait to move onto the next section.
I use this audio course in conjunction with the new penguin Russian course,(book) as it helps you learn to read the cyrillic alphabet also,
I highly recommend this audio course to anyone wanting to learn the russian language!
