Summary

Charity
I’m in trouble. Big trouble. Not that I should be surprised. My entire life has been one huge misfortune.
I have nothing and no one.
But then.... Finn comes along. Gorgeous, stubborn, and infuriating.
And he can’t seem to leave me alone.

Finn
Life hasn’t been a picnic. But finally, I had it all figured out.
But then.... Charity comes crashing into my life. Beautiful, unwavering, and aggravating.
And I can’t let her go.

Salvation

I loved this book! This book is not for the faint of heart. This may contain some triggers for some. Charity has not had an easy life. She didn't know how to trust anyone at the beginning of the book. When Fin came to pick her up from the hospital she slowly began to learn to trust in a loving man. Kai Kennicott and Wen Ross are both absolutely phenomenal narrating this boo.

Love isn't perfect

One thing I admire about Nicole as a writer is her representation of beautifully flawed and broken characters and this series of interconnected standalones is just that. Salvation is Finn and Charity's story and we have met and heard of these two characters previously in Recovery.

Finn is a ladies man, a tattoo artist and kind of a douche, Charity is a young woman that has been through hell and back, and is still living it. When Finn picks Charity up from the hospital, battered and broken, he promises his best friend Jase and his wife Mya (Charity's estranged best friend) he is determined to find out just what kind of trouble she is in.

The story of this book tackles some tough topics but the depth of character is fantastic. With each book from Nicole she builds a sense of family and it really feels like you are coming home when you read the next interconnected novel. Salvation was an easy read, it didn't want to put it down. I adored Finn, he really surprised me at just how loyal and unselfish he is despite the front he portrays, he was a whole new man when it came to Charity. He was her saviour, her protector, her healer and watching their relationship flourish was a beautiful thing.

Charity is unbelievable strong but at the same time so scared and independent to her own detriment not for herself but for anyone she surrounds herself with. I admired her tenacity and her will to survive and fight. As her walls come down with Finn, how she finds herself again, how he help her explore a new side to herself, you can't help but be captivated by this couple. You want them to work, want them to prevail over all the things standing in their way. My only critique was it was a little repetitive in both what was happening and what was said but I understand why it had to be that way because of the subject matter and the fallout from that.

There are secondary characters that I am so curious about, both themselves tortured and struggling in one way or another and I am hoping there will be more to come from them in the future. Overall another great read from Nicole and a great addition to this world she has created.

The audiobook was a great listen and there were some scenes I was really looking forward to after reading the book. So to hear those moments in audio just heightens the experience even more. A good job all round!

Now I need Christian to get this HEA

I feel like I've been waiting a long time to find out more about Charity. And Ms. Dykes didn't disappoint. Now if you've never read a book by this author, then be warned they pack an emotional hammer fist. And this is no different, except it isn't as heavy as previous books (not that this doesn't cover heavy topics because it certainly does) it seems lighter somehow. I think the way Nicole picks her titles really are apropos. Because Finn certainly wants to be Charity's salvation and in a way he is. But she certainly makes him work for it and she develops a backbone in the wake of Finn's help. I enjoyed this a lot and the narration by Kai Kennicott and Wen Ross was top tier as always. I volunteered to review an audio copy of this. All opinions are my own.

Finn & Charity!

Nicole Dykes. That's all I have to hear and I am ready to listen. Her books have a way of drawing me into a story and keeping me riveted for hours. Salvation features Finn and Charity and they had me from the start. Finn is asked by his best friends to help their friend Charity. She is in the hospital and Finn needs to pick her up. Not knowing what to expect, he sees her and the pull is instant. Protective mode engaged, he is now ready to do what it takes to keep her safe. Charity is in trouble. Roughed up by a loan shark's thugs, she knows she needs to make as much money as she can and fast. She too is in protective mode, keeping those in her past safe. But will it all be enough? As feelings grow, and danger increases, it becomes evident it just may not be! Exciting, realistic, disturbing, at times frustrating and loving, Dykes instills all the emotions and feelings of this couple. Finn is one who likes to keep those he loves safe. He is patient and so swoony, it's impossible not love him. Charity has many layers. Her life has not been easy, and it's her journey that I truly loved. Dykes weaves relevant issues, bringing awareness to the tragedies of child abuse with no sugar coating, which makes the story that much more real. It's a another fantastic story and as always I am looking for more from her.

Kai Kennicott and Wen Ross bring this story to life. These two seasoned narrators know exactly how to fall into character. Ross becomes Finn, with that feel of love of protectiveness. He has a warmth in his voice that covers you and makes you feel his emotions. Kennicott peels all the layers of Charity with her fantastic performance. With each nuance and inflection, we can feel the changes in Charity as the story progresses. It's an amazing listen!

Heartbreaking beginnings with a sweet ending

Salvation: preservation or deliverance from harm, ruin, or loss.

Finn and Charity both share a hard upbringing with how their mothers chose men over their children. Charity has been so traumatized that she didn’t know If she could truly love another until Finn came into her life. He literally saved her from continuing down a bad path and she showed him his past doesn’t have to be his present. I loved these characters and their story of learning to love together.
