Summary
So Liz is surprised when Wetherby takes her off the case - this is just her sort of operation. However, Wetherby has some very disturbing news. He has received a tip-off that a mole has been planted in one of the branches of British Intelligence. If true, then the potential damage to the Service itself could be immeasurable.
As her colleagues try to counter an impending terrorist strike, Liz must use all her skills to find out who the mole is, and what their intentions are, before it is too late.
In Secret Asset, the second Liz Carlyle novel, Stella Rimington once again brings all her experience to bear in a truly compelling thriller that takes the reader into a world where no-one can be trusted and nothing is what is seems.
Critic reviews
"Intelligent....Undeniably pacey." ( Guardian)
"This is something rare: the spy novel that prizes authenticity over fabrication." ( Mail on Sunday)
"There is an exciting feeling of getting things straight from the mare's mouth about listening to Secret Asset... Emma Fieldings voice matches the material well, elegantly modulated and authorative, but tense and fast as the pace hots and the nerve-wracking reality of dealing with a terrorist attack in Oxford reaches a climax." ( The Times)

short
good story but I wouldn't bought it if I realised it was so short . I wouldn't bother with review if I had realised it had to be more than 15words . now I am irritated

Uncomplicated listen
I’ve become quite fond of Stella’s novels, they are realistic my plausible and you always wonder if they accounts of things she’s been involved with at some point in her past.

Dated in places but full of intrigue..
Multi layered story, which takes time to build up what can only be described as a terrifying scenario, should it ever come true. That's the main thrust of this story. It's entirely credible on several layers. There are elements of the story which dates it, but also other references which suggest an entirely different period. As an example, there is a reference to a field between the chancellor and prime minister, which could refer to Brown/Blair or Johnson/Signal years later.
Emma fielding as the Narrator does a splendid job bringing the story to life and really gives emotion to the Central characters, both male and female. Stella and Emma is a combination which most definitely brings the story alive.
This is a story which you could easily go over time and time again and I dare say that made into a film, with the right actors, director and script would almost certainly revive the flagging cinemas around the world.
My one dismay was that the 3 strands of the story about one the main characters could have been more neatly drawn together. That said, this was a book trying to be honest and reflect society. In real life, not everything is neat and tidy.
Definitely worth a listen if you like, espionage and multi layered stories, with lots of twists.

Did not match expectations !
Although there was a promise of an insight into the murkey world of Spooks, I found the plot pedestrian and predictable. No twists or turns, no real surprise in the ending.
Would I recommend it ? Only if there was nothing else to read
