About this listen

A seemingly sleepy Devonshire village, Burracombe is in fact full of intrigue and drama. Family secrets, budding romance, cruel twists of fate and amazing friendships all play out against the backdrop of the beautiful countryside. It's autumn 1953. The village is delighted when Joe Tozer – who left Burracombe as a young man in 1919 – returns to visit his family. His life since emigrating to the States has been a world away from rural Devon – but coming home, he falls in love with the place (and one particular person) all over again. With him is his eldest son, Russell. He sets hearts fluttering in the village – but will there be anyone on his arm when he catches the boat back to America?

First class narration, good story

Anne is awesome yet again at narrating this series.

Again I find Colonel Napier an insanely annoying character, I wish he’d just go away. I really enjoyed other aspects of the book, such as Hilary’s development.

I was originally looking for a light hearted series, after bingeing all Miss Reads wonderful books. However, light hearted this series is definitely not. The residents of the village seem to lurch from one disaster or near disaster to another, usually involving injury or death. There is little joy, apart from the odd wedding or play / celebration. I seem to be addicted now though and want to see how it all plays out.

A Lovely Village Story

Thank you Lillian Harry for writing this lovely story of village life. I really enjoyed listening to it and as usual Anne Dover is an excellent narrator. So glad it ended happily - I hope that there will be a sequel to let us know what happens to all the people who live in the village.
