Summary
Never before on audio! All-new productions of 24 classic Ernest Hemingway stories.
This brand-new audio collection from the iconic Pulitzer and Nobel Prize-winning author is a listener’s delight. The two dozen short stories presented here have never been published on audio; these new recordings of classic stories will remind listeners of Ernest Hemingway’s incomparable mastery of the short story form.
Included are three short stories on war - by one of history’s greatest writers on the subject - that were never published in any print or audio collection before 2019: “A Room on the Garden Side”, “Indian Country and the White Army”, and “The Monument”.
Also featured here are almost 20 stories from The Complete Short Stories of Ernest Hemingway: “One Trip Across”, “The Tradesman’s Return”, “The Denunciation”, “The Butterfly and the Tank”, “Night Before Battle”, “Under the Ridge”, “Nobody Ever Dies”, “The Good Lion”, “The Faithful Bull”, “Get a Seeing-Eyed Dog”, “A Man of the World”, “An African Story”, “A Train Trip”, “The Porter”, “Black Ass at the Cross Roads”, “Landscape with Figures”, “I Guess Everything Reminds You of Something”, “Great News from the Mainland”, and “The Strange Country”. Rounding out this audio collection are two classics from the Hemingway Library edition of The Short Stories of Ernest Hemingway: “Untitled Milan Story” and “Judgment of Manitou”.
An invaluable anthology of beloved favorites and undiscovered treasures, read by acclaimed actor and audiobook narrator John Bedford Lloyd, Selected Hemingway Stories is a must-listen for every Hemingway fan.

The Masculine Principle
Hemingway’s writing embodies all things masculine including action, commerce, fighting, fishing, hunting, drinking and knowing. Whilst I appreciated his spare, real, gritty and frank style I found myself longing for some balance and some softening around the edges of his stories and perhaps most importantly, some cause for hope.

Stories from a Master!
John Bedford Lloyd provides an excellent narration, perfect for Ernest Hemingway at times I felt that it was actually being spoken by the master himself. The stories themselves cover a wide range of topics of a time unlikely to be repeated, an absolute joy to listen to.

Eclectic Collection of lesser known gems
A very interesting mix which offers snapshots into Hemingways state of mind at various points in his writing career using lesser known works. Chapters 1,2, 3 and 18 offer a look at his contoversial WW2 service and "Black Ass at the Cross Roads" is either a jawdropping piece of fiction or a record of a war crime/court martial offence? Will we ever know?

Some stories have not aged well
Hemingway was one of the band of disolute alcoholic misogynistic writers feted as brilliant in the mid 20th century. His writings about the Spanish civil war, sports and blood sports are brilliant. This collection suffers from an inclusion of a story about the relationship of a much older writer with a young woman whom he calls "daughter" (cringe) which includes such dreadful exchanges as "I want you to want me in the head as well as the bed" "Alright beauty we can talk about writing." And then she began to cry.
