About this listen

Selected poetry of Ahmed Faraz recited in his own voice. Ahmed Faraz, born Syed Ahmed Shah, was one of the most acclaimed modern Urdu Poets of the last century. Faraz was his pseudonym or 'takhallus'. Faraz, who has been compared with Faiz Ahmed Faiz, holds a unique position as one of the best poets of current times, with a fine but simple style of writting.

Faraz studied Urdu at the Peshawar University and later began teaching there. Outspoken about politics, he went into self-imposed exile during the Zial-Ul Haq era after he was arrested for reciting poems at a Mushaira criticizing the millitary rule. He stayed for six years in Britain, Canada and Europe before returning to Pakistan, where he was initially appointed Chairman Academy of Letter and later chairperon of the Islamabad based National Book Foundation for several years.

He was awarded the Hilal-e-Imtiaz in 2004, in recognition of his literary achievements. He returned the award in 2006 after becoming disenchanted with the Pakistan governmemt and its policies.

It is a refreshing change to see an Urdu poetry audio book in a plethora of classics, crime and romance etc etc , all in the English language .
Ahmed Faraz was a towering talent throughout his life, but in his later life,of which this 1hour recording is from,he acquired a maturity and wisdom far more superior than his early college life stories testified to.
Talented no doubt he was,but in this collection his forte,The Ghazal( like a sonnet form with strict rhyme rhythm and metre),seems to be flying with wings.Whether it's the easily and economically worded SILSILAY WOH TOD GAYA SAB JAATAY JAATAY/VARNA ITNAY TO MARAASIM THHEY KE AATAY JAATAY to the technically more complicated, structurally,SUNNA HAI LOG USSAY NAZAR BHAR KE DEKHTAY HAIN/YEH BAAT SACH HAI TO HUM BHI USSKAY SHAHAR MAIN THHEHR KE DEKHTAY HAIN, the late Faraz marhoom leaves no stone unturned in even surprising those who have grown up listening to his poetry on Radio Pakistan.
To sum it up,this is a wonderful collection with a great voice narrating the poetry, and although a bit on the steep side, you'll be left asking for more.
P.S. a note to the publishers_why not get a collection of two or three books together in one collection and sell it at 2£ extra cost than this single book...?

A great tribute to a great poet
