About this listen

Spain, March 1811

Cadiz is under siege – the last city standing in France’s conquest of Spain. So Captain Richard Sharpe must navigate the spymasters and murderous factions within its walls – and see off deadly threats from more than one enemy.

Deserted by their ailing Spanish allies, the British are heavily outnumbered as they prepare to halt the French at Barrosa – their last chance of liberating the fortress city of Cadiz. And ready to face his old enemy in battle is Sharpe . . .

Although It occurred to me, that with musket fire at 4 rounds a minute and only vaguely accurate at 60 yards. Almost face to face and hardly no time to reload .

When you consider that a long bow archer is lethal and faster at 200 yards, warfare went both forwards and backwards 😑

Superb details as usual

Another classic sharpe novel, the whole thing is a brilliant example of Cromwells' expertise

Great book

Good historical background but did not have the depth of some of the other books

Another solid tale of Sharpe

I have listened to all previous Sharpe stories but this one had a poorest storyline so far .Will not stop listening to more as characters are engaging and narration brilliant.

nothing of note

Clear the way, another excellent sharp classic very close to the actual battle. Fab RIRISH

taken back through time to the Napolionic time. To the battle fields of Spain and the horror of fighting with black powder and ball

realistic tale of the times

Good book, definitely don't skip it, but the story is rather weak compared to the rest of the series unfortunately. same story of sharpe being cut off from the rest of the army, same story of a beautiful woman, same battles, but just haphazardly jammed together with very little characterisation. continues the general sharpe theme of ending without giving you any (sorely sought after) post - story roundup or conclusion- I often sorely wish that the story would continue for a few months after to see how everything developed or impacted the wider campaign.

Good but not the best of the series

Really enjoyed this book . The historical notes pages from the end of all the Sharpe books are not included which is a bit disappointing as I like to find out which characters and events are real in the book . This is my only quibble however and I would thoroughly recommend it !!

Great

Had I come to this book first instead of 11th I would likely not have listened to more. Which is as negative as it gets for a die hard Sharpe fan. The story is flimsy, the telling of it turgid. Too bogged down in detail. Not Mr Cornwells finest moment.

Not one of the best

Loved the belligerent attitude and all the detail. A great escape and fantastically narrated. Highly recommended escapism!

Cracking book!
