Summary

Hell Squad sniper Shaw Baird is a man on a mission. His squad is his family and now the invading aliens have done the unforgivable...taken one of his team. Claudia Frost - soldier, friend, and all-around badass - is running on borrowed time. Shaw has vowed to bring her home, whatever it takes...and he's only just realizing now she's been taken that Claudia is a vital piece of him.

Claudia Frost is surviving...barely. Kept in chains, made to fight for the aliens' enjoyment, she can't survive much longer. But she knows her squad is coming for her...knows Shaw is coming. Only thoughts of the sexy, charming sniper get her through the hell, and for the first time in forever, she wishes she hadn't let the wounds of her past stop her from taking a taste of the man who is her friend, her sanity and her secret obsession.

But rescuing Claudia is only the first dangerous step. The alien keeping Claudia prisoner is far more intelligent, far more patient and a hell of a lot deadlier than any they've faced before. Not only is he hunting their band of human survivors through the forests of the Blue Mountains, but he wants Claudia. And he'll let nothing get in his way.

Gripping & action packed sci-fi adventure

Updated for Audio Version

The Book

A gripping and action packed sci-fi adventure with humour, some serious steam, and a HEA. What more could you want.

I absolutely love Anna Hackett's books, she's one of my all-time favourite authors and 'Shaw' is the latest addition to the fantastic Hell Squad series of sci-fi romances. I really didn't want to put it down. This action packed full-length novel had me hooked and on the edge of my seat from beginning to end, took me a few days to read and I absolutely loved it.

Set some time in the future around Australia's Blue Mountains, as well as the remains of towns and cities such as Sydney, in the aftermath of an alien invasion, the series follows some of the survivors who were holed up in the underground Blue Mountain Base as they try to fight back, finding love amidst the ruins and fighting battles along the way. All the books in this series can easily be read as stand alones with their own happily ever afters.

The Blue Mountain Base was attacked and destroyed by the Gizzida aka the Raptors, leaving the ragtag convoy of survivors in a ramshackle collection of vehicles trying to make it's way out of the mountains to another underground facility that has offered them sanctuary. They just have to get there, but being hunted and under almost continual attack by the Raptors, that's proving to be the hardest part of all.

Captured by a particularly cold blooded Raptor she's named the Huntsman during the attack on the Blue Mountain Base, feisty and tough as nails former SAS officer and Hell Squad member Claudia Frost has been in his hands for about a week. Enduring beatings, torture and fight after fight against his men, her left leg repeatedly broken and partially healed, being chained up with another prisoner, Selena, in-between, Claudia survives by holding onto the certainty that Hell Squad will come for her. Shaw will come for her. But they're taking their time about it.....

Former SAS officer, Hell Squad member and sniper Shaw Baird is not a happy camper. Since Claudia was captured by the Raptors, he's barely slept or eaten, and he desperately wants to get her back. The problem is that every time they get close, the aliens move her. He's very nearly at his wits end when one of the drones checking their proposed route out of the mountains shows Claudia fighting the Raptors, one after another, as well as in groups, in a ring set up by the Gordonstone Bridge. They obviously can't go that way now, but they've got a confirmed location, they never leave anybody behind and Hell Squad are determined to get Claudia out this time, bringing the other prisoner along as well. Now they have another alien on their hands, but Selena isn't a Raptor and although she says she's nothing special, that's not entirely true.

Now he's got Claudia back, Shaw has to find a way to keep her with him, but they both carry some serious pain from their pasts that prevents them from getting together. They trust each other with their lives, but aren't prepared to throw their hearts into the pot straight away. They need to overcome their demons before they can commit their hearts to each other... and they still have to deal with the relentless Huntsman.

I don't want to give any spoilers but there's so much in this fantastic story that it's hard not to. Well written in the third person with changing points of view, this book is filled with terrific characters, tons of action, battles and bad guys to fight, humour, lots of steam and a happily ever after. What more could you possibly want from a gripping sci-fi adventure. I can't wait to read the next one, and I'd love to know more about Selena.

The Audio

I re-read my favourite books on a fairly regular basis, but I now suffer from varying problems with my eyes, and I decided to give audio books another chance. I've mostly avoided them in the past because the narrators left a lot to be desired and generally ruined the books. Taking the literary equivalent of a nice, crisp, juicy salad with zing and turning it into something akin to a month-old limp lettuce leaf. I'm overjoyed to say that the two who narrate this series, Jeffrey Kafer and Samantha Cook are incredibly good, truly the exception rather than the rule. They managed to maintain the gritty fight for survival action adventure nature of the book and I highly recommend it to any lover of all-action, alien invasion sci-fi wrapped in a little romance with a few steamy bits for added spice. If the ebook isn't a small fortune, it's well worth doing what I did and saving a lot of money, especially if, like me, you're on a severely limited budget. I bought a new copy of the Kindle ebook and added the whisper-synced Audible Narration early last Summer. I was so impressed by the narrators that I bought all the other kindle books in the series that were available with whisper-sync and bought all the available Audible UK books as well, a total of 18 out of the series total of 20 books at the time. As I wrote an honest review of the ebook several years ago, I decided to update my review for the audio version, especially as I have been so badly disappointed with them in the past. Well worth 5 stars and then some.

Shaw's Redemption

From book one Hell Squad sniper Shaw Baird and team member Claudia Frost have fought like cats and dogs. But now Claudia is missing, taken by the aliens and Shaw will destroy the world to find her. For the first time protecting the other survivors does not take priority. His squad is his family and he has vowed to bring her home, whatever it takes. He may not be built for long time relationships, his past has taught him that, but Claudia is special.

Claudia Frost is surviving...barely. The only thing keeping her going is the knowledge that her team will find her. Shaw will find her. She may know that the sexy, charming sniper is a bad bet for forever but she has never doubted his loyalty. His commitment but not his loyalty. He is her friend, her sanity and her secret obsession. She just needs to keep him in the friend zone..

When passions finally erupt between these best friends it's more fight club then love story. If they can put old wounds behind them, survive the race to 'The Enclave' and the alien who held Claudia prisoner, then maybe they could find love among the ruins of civilisation. Only this alien is different. More intelligent. More patient and a hell of a lot deadlier. And he wants Claudia Frost. Nothing and no one will stand in his way, not even Shaw! Bring it on...

I have been waiting for six whole books for these two to get it together and I wasn't disappointed. What a book! Well worth staying up all night for.

Once again another dramatic and intense story from this incredible series. These two narrators did a great job with all these books. Cannot wait for the next book now
