Summary
It is summer 1890, and the game is afoot.
When an elephant escapes from the London Zoological Gardens, Holmes and Watson become embroiled in one of their strangest cases yet. Engaged by a jeweler in fear for his life, the trail leads Sherlock to two secret societies, each pursuing the eight ruby elephants said to unlock a vault containing the lost Nizam diamond. Standing in his way are some deadly foes: the Archangels, assassins in top hats and tailcoats, hell-bent on the murder of the great detective and the acquisition of the treasures of the realm. The adventure leads the intrepid pair to Lord's Cricket Ground, the Royal Albert Hall, a bizarre series of thefts at the National Gallery, deepest rural Suffolk, and ultimately the very heart of the empire. With high-speed chases on Penny Farthings and a cast of eccentric characters, it takes all of Holmes' ingenuity - and a little help from Mycroft - to unravel this elephantine mystery.

strange story, weirdest accents - not for me
I love Sherlock Holmes stories, from the originals to the new ones but this one was not for me - it jumped at one point to a new part of story with no explanation, I tried many times to see if it was my ipod but no. Also Holmes and Watson voices were very wrong not true to the characters at all. Sorry, not for me.

Great Sherlock romp
I liked the style of this story. The dialogues between Watson and Sherlock had an amusing and some times snarky style and I liked the turns of phrase. I think there were a few slightly far fetch pieces of deduction ( ie it would not have been as elementary a leap of logic) and the chronology was a little bit unclear however it was a fun weaving together type of plot and did not feel stiff and only a little contrived. It seems the author has an affection for Sherlock and Watson and since I do too I was happy to be lead along to the end. See what you think.

A Struggle.
I'm afraid I gave up on this half way through, I just couldn't muster the will to be bothered about the ending. There were some good moments, and perhaps if I had been reading a paperback I would have persevered to the end, but the narration is simply awful. The narrator does not impart any discernable difference in voices to the characters, even those described as having booming deep voices, or female characters, so that it becomes difficult to follow who is speaking. The intonation is such that it seems that the wrong words are stressed in a sentence, and the pace means that at times the words seem to just babble along: Several times I had to rewind and try again as I had been merely listening to noise rather than digesting the words. There are so many fantastic narrators, and a score of successful pastiches of the Sherlock Holmes canon, but for me this performance was not a winning combination.
