About this listen
The new Sherlock Holmes novel from the New York Times best-selling author of The Age of Odin and Firefly: Big Damn Hero.
It is 1890, and in the days before Christmas, Sherlock Holmes and Dr. John Watson are visited at Baker Street by a new client. Eve Allerthorpe - eldest daughter of a grand but somewhat eccentric Yorkshire-based dynasty - is greatly distressed, as she believes she is being haunted by a demonic Christmas spirit.
Her late mother told her terrifying tales of the sinister Black Thurrick, and Eve is sure that she has seen the creature from her bedroom window. What is more, she has begun to receive mysterious parcels of birch twigs, the Black Thurrick’s calling card....
Eve stands to inherit a fortune if she is sound of mind, but it seems that something - or someone - is threatening her sanity. Holmes and Watson travel to the Allerthorpe family seat at Fellscar Keep to investigate, but soon discover that there is more to the case than at first appeared. There is another spirit haunting the family, and when a member of the household is found dead, the companions realize that no one is beyond suspicion.

Passed the time
Overall a good story, though it needed an editor to blue-pencil some of the overlong descriptive " padding", or less kindly, the waffle. I found some words jarring as being American rather than Victorian English, e.g. a maid being told repeatedly that she would be "fired" for wrongdoing, rather than be "dismissed". No Victorian would have used "fired" in this sense. There were other instances that made me wince.
And whilst Dennis Kleinman is a good reader, after listening to two of these stories back to back, I find that his range of voices a little repetitive, and he really struggled with the Yorkshire accent, both upper and lower class.
The reading is definitely a bit weird on pronunciation in places. One example, the word "convivial" was pronounced "con-vive-al", that made me wince too - but maybe I'm being too perninckety.

Another great Holmes story
I really enjoyed this as I have Lovegrove's other Holmes stories . We'll read with believable characters, it really captures the essence of Holmes and Watson. I would highly recommend.

Extremely good story and read. Loved it!
This is the 3rd book about Sherlock Holmes written by James Lovegrove that I have read. Amazingly good story and narrator. Jeremy Brett was my favourite and I can see him clearly with these brilliantly written tales. Can’t wait to read more.

I'm sure A.C-D would approve
After exhausting the originals I've been glad to come across these and get as much joy from them. Although not in line with more modern renditions, the narrator reminds me of "my Holmes" who I used to watch on TV as a child.
