About this listen
Written by a pilot who flew near-daily combat missions, this engrossing book is the story of one man, his colleagues, and his machine, the mighty F-4 Phantom II, at war.
Sherman Lead is the gripping story of a year flying the F-4 in combat during the Vietnam War, told through the eyes of a fighter pilot. Operating out of Ubon Royal Thai Air Base, Thailand in 1968-69, Gail Peck and his squadronmates in the 433rd Tactical Fighter Squadron of the 8th Tactical Fighter Wing were tasked with flying combat missions into North Vietnam and Laos at this time as part of Operations Rolling Thunder and Steel Tiger.
The F-4 was heavily involved in the air-to-ground mission at this time, with targets being well defended by enemy anti-aircraft artillery and surface-to-air missiles. Gail Peck's arrival in-theatre coincided with the beginning of electro-optical and laser guided "smart" bomb combat operations. There were periods of fierce combat interspersed with lulls, and the fighting was intense and unforgettable to those who participated. Some men lived through it, and others died without a clear understanding of why.

brilliant, nearly.
story is wonderful, the narration is awful. sounds like A.I. monotone and emotionless. Still very much worth a listen, but could be so much easier to listen to

How can anyone make this sound boring is beyond me
I had to give up listening to this audio book during the 3rd chapter. My ears couldn't take any more.
You'd think it would be impossible to make a book on this subject - a fighter pilot's account of his 13-month tour of combat operations in Vietnam - boring but this narrator manages to do just that. The narration isn't *quite* the flat monotone of the audible book of Cornelius Ryan's "A Bridge Too Far", but it's not far off. My advice is don’t subject your ears to this.
I’ve deleted this audio book and bought the kindle version.

Couldn't finish this.
Normally an avid reader of combat aviation this was poor. As others have noted some very good detail on preparing for missions over Vietnam, however the repetitive nature of this detail became boring.
More a story of air force training with a some elements of combat flying. I could not finish this as stories were constantly being repeated - how I saw it, how my colleague saw it, how the newspapers reported it; a little overdone.
