About this listen
In Solemate, Lauren Mackler provides a groundbreaking road map to help people achieve mastery of their lives. Drawing from her own experiences, those of her clients, and the fields of psychology, physiology, sociology, holistic healing, and strategic business practices, Mackler provides the practical information, tools, and exercises to show you how to be independent and stand on your own two feet.
Mastering the art of aloneness is about becoming the person you were meant to be, treating yourself well, and shedding the old beliefs and behaviors that limit your ability to live a healthy, happy, secure, and satisfying life. Quizzes and guided journaling help you identify the core limiting beliefs and fears that keep you from being whole and happy with yourself. Mackler teaches you to overcome these beliefs through deliberate living exercises that help align your actions with your desired results. She then helps you liberate your authentic self, so you know exactly who you are. Finally, she leads you through the process of creating a life vision to help you achieve any goal you set for yourself.
Solemate is not about being alone, it is about developing the self-awareness, life skills, and emotional intelligence needed to live a full, happy, successful, and financially secure life.

Deserves a place in any single's library
I went from a long-term relationship to being on my own, likely permanently, in September 2015. At first I found being on my own quite a struggle and even the basics such keeping my apartment tidy were beyond me. I sought out books on both living alone and also ones to help me understand loneliness, which I felt was my main struggle. Two of the better ones I found were The Lonely City by Olivia Laing and also The Art of Living Alone & Loving It by the plucky Australian woman Jane Mathews. This book by Lauren Mackler, which I have owned for some time in paperback and has been brought to life in audiobook just now, is another which belongs a place in the library of thoughtful, reflective singles. As with the other two having a mix of general advice and personal memoir makes things much more relateable and all three authors had interesting stories to tell - their personal challenges seemed more difficult than mine and put my own issues in context. Where I feel this book is strong is going around all the major aspects of the single life and inviting personal reflection - I think it was said the book originally arose from a series of 12 classes that became a weekend workshop, so the feeling was quite like being on a weekend retreat (especially if you block out some time to listen to it in larger chunks). If you are single and are interested in living a full life, not just in books on how to escape your single condition by finding a partner as soon as possible, this is well worth a listen.
