Summary

England, 1455

King Henry VI is proving to be an unstable monarch, prone to bouts of mysterious illness and susceptible to manipulation from others. Richard of York, the most powerful magnate in the land, steps in to manage affairs whilst Henry is unwell.

Many people prefer York's rule, which does not please the queen. The country begins to divide and plots start to hatch.

York himself is directly descended from the royal family line, in fact, a little more directly than Henry, but he puts this fact aside and strives only to serve the king. This, however, becomes increasingly difficult due to the acts of the queen, who, now feeling threatened by York, calls her men to get rid of him. The York family is strong and the two eldest sons, Edward and Edmund are approaching manhood. Edward, bold and eager, is keen to leave his childhood behind and enter the world of men, of politics, combat, and love. Edmund, the younger brother, is more introspective and struggles to project his public image. Both boys look to York as their mentor, a match for any king; and Richard is proud of them both. But with sons comes the question of inheritance. Who will succeed Henry's throne?

Poor narration. Dreary take on the Roses

The narrator sounds like she's reading to children. Her attempt at different voices fails abysmally.

Thete are far better books on this subject. Amy Licence has made a mess of this story, the narrator seals its demise.

loved this take on fictional history

I downloaded this book then looked at the reviews. So based on these I held no great hope of a good listen. However! I loved the flowing voice of the narrator, her voice flowed me from chapter to chapter, I could listen to her voice anytime its so pleasant.
I love anything to do with wars of the roses, any British history tbh, I also enjoy fictional history, so very much enjoyed this take on well known characters.
A slightly slow start but second chapter had me hooked. my husband also listened and he also liked the story and narrator, so much so he asked me to check for a second book.
its one of those try it and make your own mind up. but my family gives ut 5 stars.....

a refreshing tale of Edwards youth

it was free and I hope that the author gets business from it as it was well written. a bit gorey for my taste but it was a turbulent time for English people.
