About this listen

Small but very determined Sophie wants to be a lady farmer when she grows up. Down in the potting shed, she has made a start and keeps flocks of free-range wood lice and herds of snails. The stories are well constructed and King-Smith knows how to create the thoughts of children with charming clarity and astonishing respect. Cribbens' soft but animated voice is the perfect complement.

I've been listening to this reading of Sophie's Snail by Bernard Cribbens, since I was about 7. We had it on cassette tape and I'm so pleased to find the same recording on Audible. It's been a go-to for helping me sleep for over 25 years.

Simple and perfect

It might be mildly humiliating but I love this recording of this story. Sometimes when I can’t sleep I reach straight for this. It’s the small wins and tiny might that I find quietly inspiring. Farewell Twinkletoes.

I still come back to it as an adult…

I love the fact that she is so young and she is trying to use such big words for her age (6 years old)and she does not say it properly.

Smith dose it again

Cool story, but sophie is too rebellious. 0 stars. She loves dirt and horrid slimy things like wood lice and horse poo. I'd want a pink pony with a braided mane to do dressage. Now dawn is pretty nicely dressed the perfect girl! Down with sophie! Up with dawn!

Cool but too young
