Editor reviews

This is an intriguing assortment of brief histories that nevertheless don't feel skimpy. Topics include the history of the whaling industry (which can get a little technical), a vivid account of London's devastating fire of 1666, a fascinating history of the Rosetta stone, useful background and context on the Magna Carta, and an eye-opening examination of the relationship between the Barbary Pirates and slavery. The narrators are varied but capable, and bring dramatic intensity to the exciting stories. A great intellectual grab bag likely to contain plenty of information you haven’t encountered before.

Critic reviews

"I'm learning all sorts of stuff about stuff I didn't even know I didn't know. And it sticks. In a nutshell: wonderful." (Jonathon Margolis, Financial Times)
